Central Berkshire School Committee Appoints Dalton Representative

DALTON, Mass.  — Central Berkshire Regional School Committee appointed its newest member, Sara Tucker, during its meeting last week.    Tucker will be serving as the committee's Dalton representative taking the place of the town's former representative Nicole Tucker. Although Sara and Nicole share a last name they have no relation.    Nicole Tucker decided to leave her seat early, which caused a vacancy on the committee that needed to be filled. The district put a call out for applications and received three but two dropped out.    The seat will be included in the elections in November so the community can vote who they want to have as the

Berkshire NAACP Holds In-Person Freedom Fund Awards

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Hundreds gathered at the Proprietor's Lodge last weekend for the Berkshire NAACP's Freedom Fund Awards. The sold-out event that had been virtual the last three years returned with a bang.  

The night included dinner, dancing, and awards given to people whose advocacy has made positive strides in the community. The event raises money for college scholarships to support students of color, awarding more than $75,000 to nearly 90 students.

Licensing Board: Thistle & Mirth Rebrand Proper Response to Stabbing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Licensing Board is satisfied with Thistle and Mirth's rebranding after a violent incident on Thanksgiving Eve.

The matter was filed on Monday during a show cause hearing for a stabbing on Nov. 22 after the panel determined that the owners have taken full responsibility and are moving the establishment in a positive direction.

"For me, I see that you took full responsibility and want to do business differently and you are," board member Kathy Amuso said.

Co-owner Austin Oliver agreed, "We don't want to invite those types of behaviors and things into Pittsfield. That doesn't do any good for us or downtown Pittsfield for the

PCTV Adds Spanish Language Translations to Programming

PITTSFIELD Mass. — Pittsfield Community Television has received funding from Berkshire United Way to add closed captions in Spanish to many local programs broadcast on PCTV's channels.    The service will allow Spanish speakers to follow along with government meetings as words will be translated into Spanish, allowing Pittsfield government another level of transparency.   "Our community is stronger when everyone has the opportunity to participate in civic life and to understand what is happening and how the decisions that affect people's lives are made. BCC Prepares Students for New FAFSA Form

Dalton Board OKs Technical Assistance Application

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board last week approved an amended application for Berkshire Regional Planning Commission's District Local Technical Assistance Program (DLTA).   If accepted, the DLTA grant would provide the town technical assistance in planning for housing and growth in an effort to address housing needs within the community. BRPC would provide the assistance at no cost to the community.    The commission gets money from the state for the DLTA program. County Residents Earn Bay State Games Skating Medals

State Historical Commission Favors Wahconah Park Preservation

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Historical Commission wants to see the Wahconah Park grandstand preserved.

This was announced to the historic park's restoration committee on Thursday, months after it supported a razed and elevated design. Planners had been trying to get in touch with the state commission for some time and received a formal response after filing a project notification form.

The commission said it "encourages consideration of project alternatives that would preserve the historic grandstand."

BHS Relaxes Masking and Updates Visitor Guidelines

State Unemployment and Job Estimates for Dec. 2023

BOSTON, Mass. — The state's December total unemployment rate was 3.2 percent, up 0.3 percentage point from the revised November estimate of 2.9 percent, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced.    The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 0.5 percentage points lower than the national rate of 3.7 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Over-the-year, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down by 0.5 percentage points.   The labor force grew by an estimated 13,900 from the revised estimate of 3,729,000 in November, the largest single month increase since January 2022.
