PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC)'s Honors Program will hold a year-end celebration on Thursday, June 2 at 2 pm. The hour-long event will be held in Melville Hall, Room M-212, and will also be available for virtual attendance on Zoom (https://zoom.us/j/6236694683). Opening remarks will be presented by Laura Saldarini, BCC Director of Academic Operations. The featured speaker is Soncere (Starr) Williams, Berkshire Honors Scholar alumna. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday spent four hours beginning its review of the city's $172 million budget, preliminarily passing nine departments' spending plans as proposed. At-Large Councilor Karen Kalinowsky, Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren, and Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick unsuccessfully motioned to make amendments to different departments. Kronick even delved into his personal views of gender identity when discussing the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, later adding that city government is not responsible for others' feelings.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Last week, iBerkshires reported that COVID-19 cases continued to rise after a surge that pushed the city into the "red zone" and hospitalizations had also increased. This week, the report is the same. On Sunday, the percent positivity rate was 16.6 percent and there were about 132 cases per 100,000 people. The positivity rate was 12.4 percent on the previous Sunday and there were 106 cases per 100,000 people.
This is a stark contrast to the positivity rate of 2.1 in late March when there were only about 13 cases per 100,000 people.
On Monday, there were 20 people hospitalized with the virus at Berkshire Medical Center compared to 17 last week. There

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield police arrested a 16-year-old boy, a 17-year-old boy, and a 19-year-old man believed to be involved in the Brierwood Lane Shooting that left an 18-year-old seriously injured. On Tuesday, April 26 at approximately 5:00 pm members of the Pittsfield Police Department (PPD) responded to Brierwood Lane in Pittsfield for a reported shooting. Police reported that well over a dozen shell casings were discovered. The subsequent investigation revealed that an 18-year-old Pittsfield man had been shot multiple times and was seriously injured.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program recently led a four-month program called Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL). The free program, designed for senior citizens interested in increasing mobility, was held twice a week from Jan 10 through May 4.  LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Voters will take up an annual town meeting warrant with 19 articles on Saturday, which includes a changing the name of the Board of Selectmen and a citizen's petition for recalling elected officials. Town meeting will be held beginning at noon on Saturday, May 21, at Lanesborough Elementary School. Article 15, if approved, would change the name of the Board of Selectmen to the Select Board and to revise the bylaws to reflect it. Article 19, a citizen's petition, would create legislation for the town to conduct recall elections. Let's Go Paperless | This is from Ward 6 Councilor John Krol's eblast today. His switch to digital immediately caught our attention. With the associated costs - nearly $4,000 a year for paper alone! - zipping councilors "the packet" (as we in the know like to call it) over the ether makes loads of sense.
Digital also means the average citizen gets far better access to these public documents than ever before. The city clerk's office has been diligent about posting meeting agendas and, where possible, relevant documents. So in terms of saving money and time and getting information out efficiently, digital is the way to go.
I would like to thank City Clerk Linda Tyer for agreeing to print out one less city council packet, as I have officially gone paperless for council meetings - which I hope will be a trend that can be extended throughout city government.
 The bulky (and often, very bulky) city council packet that councilors use for a reference costs an average of $170 per meeting for paper alone. Add the additional costs of ink/toner, wear and tear on city hall copiers, and the time and energy of staff who put it all together - and a simple transition away from paper benefits everyone.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Dozens of youths, many of them under the age of 5, attended an open house at the Berkshire Music School Saturday, as the educational nonprofit enters its 70th year at its 30 Wendell Avenue home.
The open house featured a sample class, access to musical instruments, information for parents, refreshments... and more than a few delighted squeals, proving once again the inherent interest in making a joyful noise is not generational, and will never go out of style.
