Danielle Lemieux was able to snap a photo of the birds to confirm it was an osprey nest.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Danielle Lemieux was on her routine commute to class at Berkshire Community College when she spied a rare sight.

The ornithology student discovered the third osprey nest on record in the county.

While it isn't rare for the birds of prey to be seen in the area, they typically settle in coastal regions and finding a nest is "extremely unusual," said Lemieux, whose discovery last week took her environmental science education to a new level.

"It's really exciting that we have this amazing bird nesting right in our back yards," she

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
06:32AM / Saturday, April 27, 2024

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Downtown Pittsfield Inc. proposed angled parking on North Street and was pleasantly surprised that the city responded with an in-depth study and new plans — even if they don't include angled parking.

The City Council mulled a study and resulting design on Tuesday that maintains parallel parking while expanding pedestrian zones and adding protected bike lanes. DPI last year requested that angled parking be considered in the corridor after polling showed 60 percent support for a reconfiguration.

The study can be found here.

"When we brought the request to the City Council to reconfigure the parking patterns in downtown, we

Dalton Preview Town Meeting Set April 29
By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
03:51PM / Friday, April 26, 2024
DALTON, Mass. — Residents will have the opportunity to review the town meeting warrant in advance during a preview meeting at Wahconah Regional High School on Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m.    The town started to do "baby" town meetings last year to give voters the chance to ask questions regarding the warrant articles.    "We can get into as much detail as people like there. It's a great opportunity for people to become educated about what's on the warrant and why, if they so choose," Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson said at a recent Select Board meeting.   "And that is hopefully going to make for better discussion at town meeting

@theMarket: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back Keep Traders on Their Toes
By Bill Schmick,
02:09PM / Friday, April 26, 2024
The S&P 500 bounced by more than 2 percent this week, retracing almost half of the 5 percent decline we have suffered so far in April. The jury is still out on whether this is only a dead-cat bounce or a signal that the downside is over.   It was a week of mixed messages for sure. Good earnings drove markets up on Monday and Tuesday. About 43 percent of companies listed on the S&P 500 Index have reported so far. Overall, 57 percent of them are beating estimates. Those that have been beaten are doing so by a median of 8 percent. There have been stand-out winners and losers among them.   Meta, for example, had good results, but its future guidance (higher capital

By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
05:32AM / Friday, April 26, 2024
DALTON, Mass. — Solutions are being sought for the lift in Town Hall that has been out of service since December because of safety concerns.    Building Grounds Superintendent Jeff Burch told the Americans with Disabilities Act Committee meeting on Tuesday night that Hill Engineering has been contracted to come up with a potential option.   The lift is in the police station and the only other lift for the town hall is in the library, which is not accessible after library hours.    Previous attempts by Garaventa Lift to repair it have been unsuccessful.    Replacing it in the same location is not an option because the new weight limit requirement went

The Retired Investor: Real Estate Agents Face Bleak Future
By Bill Schmick,
04:49PM / Thursday, April 25, 2024
It has been a month since the National Association of Realtors (NAR) was forced to scrap a system of broker fees that has been in place for a generation. A federal court still must approve the change in June or July, but if it does, it could alter the way Americans buy and sell homes for decades into the future.   The change was precipitated by a series of class action lawsuits from home sellers that accused Realtors and the Realtors Association of keeping agent compensation artificially high. In October 2023, a federal jury in Kansas City found the NAR and some of the largest brokers in the country guilty of colluding to inflate real estate commissions.   The damages of that suit
