 More than 23 million Americans purchased or adopted pets during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, these new pet owners are discovering that the costs of caring for these pets are climbing higher and higher as inflation takes its toll. The annual inflation rate over 12 months ending in June 2022 was 9.1 percent. We all know what this has done to food prices, rents, energy, etc. One subset of the population that has been especially hard hit by rising inflation is pet owners, according to a recent study by Veterinarians.org.  NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — More than 80 educators from across the county gathered at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to learn how to cope with job-related stress.
"It's about being aware of what you do every day and the impact that your work has, but also the impact the work has on you," said Michael Smith, who led the participants in the professional development workshop.
Smith, a therapist for Optimal Healing in North Adams, and Scott Balawander, the school adjustment councilor for Hoosac Valley Middle School, put the workshop together. It was one of more than 50 offered to the county's educators on Tuesday by Berkshire Educational Resources K12 (BERK12) for its

Select Board Chair Marybeth Mitts celebrates getting the grant. LENOX, Mass. — The town has been allocated over $180,000 from the state's Rural and Small Town grant program toward a sewer extension and creation project. It will support design and engineering costs to bring a municipal sewer system into north Lenox and serve a 65-unit mixed-income rental housing project, developable land, and existing businesses.
The project, currently in a pre-design phase, will also connect to at least 100 homes on dated septic systems.
"The benefits of this infrastructure project will be transformative," Select Board Chair Marybeth Mitts said.

The department's old ambulance is 12 years old and was beginning to have mechanical issues due to its age. LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Nearly two years after originally placing an order for the vehicle, Lanesborough has a new blue ambulance, which went into service Tuesday night.
The town's Emergency Medical Services placed the order for the nearly $300,000 ambulance in June of 2021 after approval at annual town meeting. The ambulance, currently awaiting some final decals, arrived Monday night and was ready for use by 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Herman Melville's writing desk and the view that purportedly inspired a whale called Moby Dick. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A small group of educators explored ways to integrate local history into lesson plans at Arrowhead on Tuesday. The "More Than Melville" workshop at author Herman Melville's home presented teachers with educational opportunities at local historical organizations, covering topics such as civics, artifact collections, and Native American history.
It was part of the countywide professional development day sponsored by Berkshire Educational Resources K12, which engaged more than 1,000 teachers in around 50 different daylong workshops.

Supporters ready to welcome state Senate winner Paul Mark at Patrick's Pub on Tuesday night. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Paul Mark will move out of the House and down the hall to the state Senate this January. A six-term representative of the 2nd Berkshire District, the Democrat was leading his Republican opponent Brendan Phair of Pittsfield by nearly 60 percent with more than a third of precincts reporting on Tuesday night. Around 50 supporters rallied for Mark at Patrick's Pub on Tuesday night.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The school policy subcommittee voted to adopt a revised Mission, Vision, Core Values policy after making two amendments during its meeting on Monday afternoon. Member William Cameron proposed amending the draft to add "Academic Excellence" as a new section in the policy. The revised section now says the public schools commit to "supporting a community that creates and sustains an atmosphere of intellectual excitement, high student achievement, critical thinking, innovative effective instruction, strong communication, and personal responsibility and growth."
