 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Alf Barbalunga wants to make sure the Berkshire County sheriff's office is fiscally responsible and equitable. He's challenging incumbent Thomas Bowler's leadership over the past dozen years in the Democratic primary election on Sept. 6.
"It's been a dream of mine to run. I first started thinking about it when I was 6 years old. I was introduced to this sheriff at the time and I asked him, What do you do for work? And he told me he was the sheriff of Berkshire County and I said, 'What does that mean?' as a 6-year-old and he said, 'I'm in the business of helping people," Barbalunga said.

DALTON, Mass. — The Finance Committee agreed with the Select Board decision to approve the 19 percent sewer rate increase after an extensive discussion Wednesday night. Although the sewer system is not in need of any immediate attention for repair, there are things that need to be done to be proactive. As of this year, the town has $958,000 in sewer stabilization; the estimated cost of repairs is $759,000. If the budget is built up now, money will not have to be borrowed in the future and put it on taxpayers, said officials. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Pittsfield man has been sentenced to prison on multiple domestic violence charges. Dominic Simonetta, 49, pled guilty to single counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, witness intimidation, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a household member, and two counts of threat to commit a crime. The commonwealth requested four to six years in state prison, and the defense requested no more than two years and eight months.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Humane Society will rename its animal shelter the Dr. John C. Reynolds Adoption and Education Center in honor of the late veterinarian. Dr. Reynolds died last December in a kayaking accident but his family announced on Tuesday that it will gift the shelter $500,000 in response its "Forever Family" fundraising campaign with a challenge to the community to match this amount. The $1 million raised will secure rights to name the animal shelter at 214 Barker Road.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — There is one less liquor license in Pittsfield. On Monday, the Licensing Board voted to rescind Barcelona Tapas and Bar's annual all-alcohol license. Its former tavern, Johnny's Beach Club, has been closed for a number of years and, in 2019, the owners opted to put it on the market.
At the board's June meeting, owners were given two months to make a sale or the liquor license would be rescinded. Since then, the front section of the building was demolished after a pickup truck crashed into it and no sale has been made.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Pittsfield man has been arrested in connection with the unarmed robbery at Greylock Federal Credit Union on Aug. 8. Police say Daniel McCutchen, 53, was identified as the person who walked into Kellog Street branch, presented a handwritten demand note for money and then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Shacktown residents want the Supreme Judicial Court to weigh in on the city's notification process for the cell tower at 877 South St., alleging that they found out about it when construction vehicles showed up on their narrow residential roads. In April 2020, the abuttors filed a complaint in Berkshire Superior Court trying to annul the Zoning Board of Appeals' approval of the tower and seeking a new ZBA hearing. They claimed that notification was not received through the mail.
The defendants, Pittsfield Cellular Telephone Co., doing business as Verizon Wireless, and the ZBA, filed a joint motion for summary judgment. the judgment ruled against the
