SALEM, Mass. -- Despite the scorching 90-plus degree temperatures, the Pittsfield National and Mansfield 8-10 Year Old All-Star teams played their hearts out on Saturday at O’Grady Field.   Mansfield came out on top with a 3-1 win, advancing to Sunday's state championship game.   "It’s sad that our adventure has come to an end, but I couldn’t be more proud of the teamwork and heart these 12 boys showed in the month and a half we had them together," Pittsfield Nats coach Mark Socie said.   Mansfield struck early scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.   Gio Scarpellini of Mansfield and Connor Paronto of Pittsfield

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
05:59PM / Saturday, July 20, 2019
DALTON, Mass. -- Overheard on Saturday morning in the Berkshire Thunder dubout at Pine Grove Park: "Oh my God, it's hot."   And it was.   Maybe not quite as hot as the weatherman had predicted, but it was sticky. And everyone had their own approach to beating the heat at the 10th annual Dalton CRA Softball Tournament.   Some brought pop-up tents. Most enjoyed time at the cooling stations set up by the CRA staff. One program -- from the Pioneer Valley -- decided to skip the event altogether. The Thunder stormed to a three-inning win to get off the field as fast as possible.   The Berkshire Force and ACS Swat 16-and-under teams? They decided to play a game

05:56PM / Saturday, July 20, 2019
ROCHESTER, N.H. -- Will Kinne scored on a two-out error in the bottom of the sixth to break a 6-6 tie and send the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars on to a 7-6 win over Nashua, N.H., on Saturday at the New England Regional Championships.   The winning rally started when Jake Hall drew a leadoff walk. He was eventually erased trying to score from third on a ground ball, but Kinne already had reached on the second Nashua error of the inning.   Kinne went to third on Nick Guachione's two-out single and scored when Collin Merwin reached on an error.   Tyler Gaudette retired the side in the order in the top of the seventh to earn the win after going to the hill in

Kavey Looks to Provide New Perspective in Pittsfield's Ward 5 Bid
By Andy McKeever, iBerkshires Staff
04:32PM / Saturday, July 20, 2019
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — When Patrick Kavey returned to his hometown he had trouble finding work.   "I started applying to professional jobs. I had an interesting time finding either a job that would compensate me based on what you would see for an area of this size in the region or just finding specific jobs in general," Kavey said.    His background is in business management, with a degree from Westfield State University and a former store manager of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and then assistant manager of two restaurants, but every job he found would be filled internally. He turned his eyes to New York City and other large metropolitan areas.   But

"We're a confident team, and I just keep preaching to those guys: Just be confident. Don't get down on yourselves.   "Just because we're down a run or two, it

Braintree Blanks Pittsfield Babe Ruth 15s at Regional
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
09:04PM / Friday, July 19, 2019
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The best thing that could be said about the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Stars' New England Regional opener is that it was just the first game of pool play.   But that was not the only positive to take away from a 4-0 loss to Braintree at Bullens Field.   The biggest other positive may be that despite 10 walks and four Pittsfield errors, the team only gave up four runs, all in the top of the second.   Pittsfield pitchers Sam Sherman, Stevie Zuccalo and Mike Zwinglestein stranded 13 runners to help keep the team in the ballgame.   Another plus to take going into Saturday's 2 p.m. matchup with the Rhode Island State
