Pittsfield Con Comm Ratifies Two Emergency Work PermitsBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Conservation Commission ratified two emergency permits for infrastructure work subject to the Wetlands Protection Act on Thursday. Erosion damage had to be repaired on the roadway shoulder of Dan Casey Memorial Drive and a blocked culvert needed to be addressed on East New Lenox Road. The two projects were completed by June 1.
Both required a WPA emergency certification form through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection with the Pittsfield Highway Department as the applicant.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS), Massachusetts State Police (MSP), law enforcement and transportation partners hosted a safety event today due to an alarming rise in roadway fatalities. Roadway fatalities in Massachusetts and across the nation increased in calendar year 2021, a year when traffic volume was still not at levels seen before the pandemic. In 2021, Massachusetts had more than 400 roadway deaths—the highest amount in more than 11 years and 22 percent higher than in 2020. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) surged in May 2022 as gas prices continued to run higher. These results came as a downside surprise to a stock market that has been falling most of the week. Friday's CPI number for May 2022 reflected an increase of 1 percent, compared to "hot" estimates of 0.3 percent in April 2022. On a year-over-year basis, the gain was 8.6 percent, which is a 40-year high in the CPI. Gasoline prices were a key driver of inflation last month, although Owners' Equivalent Rent (OER), which accounts for about a third of the CPI, also gained. DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Health provided an update on the Community Recreation Association's (CRA) pool permit on Monday which is still in process until the CRA can resolve the combined chlorine discrepancies and can show that the drain covers have not expired in accordance to the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Law Enforcement Task Force and the Berkshire State Police Detective Unit report that it is finding an increased amount of fentanyl in various drugs that recreational users may not be expecting. Law enforcement responding to recent overdoses, both fatal and non-fatal, are discovering through toxicology and drug testing that fentanyl is present more frequently in cocaine products and drugs purported to be prescription but are not, according to information from the Berkshire District Attorney's Office. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is looking to adopt an affordable housing trust to create and preserve accessible housing in the community. On Monday, the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee unanimously voted in favor of the trust. It will be sent to the full council next week.
"Basically it's a mechanism that communities can adopt as a way to help create affordable housing, and there's a whole host of ways it can do that," City Planner CJ Hoss explained.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Immigrant Center is celebrating 25 years of providing vital services to local immigrants. BIC was founded in 1997 by the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires to resettle Russian refugees and, in October 2021, became an independent nonprofit organization. The organization has helped more than 1,000 people become citizens, which Development Director Sheryl Lechner identified as its biggest impact.
"We're really the only local alternative offering accredited, legal immigration services accredited by the Department of Justice as an alternative to a private immigration attorney," she explained.
