In Drafting Support Letter for Pittsfield Condo Project, Some Call for Redesign

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Affordable Housing Trust will draft a letter of support for a proposed condominium build on Linden Street but some members would like to see the plan better comply with the overlay district it is in.

A 40-unit housing development is proposed at the former Polish Community Club, adding four additional buildings to the property. Developer Robert Shan reported that it could cost as much as $20 million and planners are vying for $10 million through the MassHousing CommonWealth Builder Program created to facilitate the construction of single-family homes and condominiums affordable to households with moderate incomes.

Pittsfield School Committee Approves Contracts, Resolution for Chapter 70 Aid

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee on Wednesday OK'd several contractual items and a call for the state to adjust the inflation rate for Chapter 70 funding.

A tentative agreement was approved between the committee and the Pittsfield Federal of School Employees bus drivers and bus attendants unit covering Sept. 1, 2022, through Aug. 31, 2025.

"This memorandum of agreement which we're glad to have worked out with the federation, the bus drivers and attendants unit," Chair William Cameron explained.

Governor Files Mass Leads Act

BOSTON — Today, Governor Maura T. Healey filed the Mass Leads Act, her administration's economic development bond bill that will strengthen Massachusetts' global leadership in life sciences and launching  investments in climatetech and applied artificial intelligence (AI).

Pittsfield Public School Budget Cuts Trigger Little Feedback at Hearing

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Few people attended a school budget hearing explaining the need to cut more than 100 Pittsfield Public School employees.

On Wednesday, two special education employees spoke about the importance of preserving positions within their department. Included in the proposed districtwide reductions are 27 teachers, 26 paraprofessionals, and seven instruction and accountability coordinators.

Special Education Coordinator Joanne McGill shared her experience over the last couple of years at Pittsfield High School, saying, "I am well aware that even some cuts will likely result in me losing my position as I am one of the newer employees.

Free community Screening of 'Till'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — As part of the Pittsfield Public Schools Arts Integration & Community Partnership Program, a special collaboration between the school district and the Berkshire County chapter of the NAACP, a free community screening of the film, "Till," will be held at 6 p.m. on March 26 at Taconic High School at 96 Valentine Road in Pittsfield.    The new program, which is centered on classroom-based arts integration instruction, launched in February with a professional development presentation to all secondary teachers and staff in the school district. BMC to Hold Free Narcan Training April 24

DALTON, Mass. — The Berkshire Medical Center Harm Reduction Van is holding free Narcan training on April 24 at 6 p.m. at United Methodist Church.    The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at the church will be offering 50 free Narcan kits it received in March.    Health Agent Agnes Witkowski said having an event like this is one of her short-term goals and she hopes to do a second one in town later this year.

Pittsfield CPA Committee OKs Funding Extension, Plans Formal Process

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission is seeking an extension for Community Preservation Act funding after a previously awarded project "fell through the cracks."

On Monday, the Community Preservation Committee voted to honor the request and formalize a process for three-year CPA extensions. The commission was awarded $5,000 in two consecutive years for a contractor to do inventory forms on endangered Pittsfield properties.

"My understanding and I don't know what the whole timeline is, one of those year's funding has lapsed, the other hasn't," Historical Commission Chair John Dickson told the committee.

Dalton Fire District Starts Drafting Budget

DALTON, Mass. —The Fire District started drafting its preliminary budget for fiscal year 2025 during its meeting last week.    The district has been tightly budgeting the last three years in an effort to keep the taxes down but prices are continuing to increase so this cannot continue, Water Commission Chair James Driscoll said.   The district's free cash has run dry, so it is time to start budgeting healthily to cover the cost of operations and build the free cash back up in emergencies, while also being reasonable to taxpayers, Fire Chief Christian Tobin said.    Driscoll emphasized that it is very early on in the budgeting process and things
