By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
04:40PM / Saturday, August 20, 2022
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Asked to position himself for a photo in front of Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art's signature upside-down installation "Tree Logic," Paul Mark is ready with a quip.   "I'm an old lineman," Mark says. "I like that"   As he campaigns for a seat in the state Senate, Mark works his life experience, which includes time as a lineman for the phone company, into a variety of contexts.   One context is his commitment to the concept of Medicare for All, which drove him to be an inaugural member of the Medicare for All Caucus in the state House of Representatives, where he has served the 2nd Berkshire District

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com
05:15PM / Friday, August 19, 2022
GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Pittsfield's quest to bring a Babe Ruth World Series title back to the Berkshires came up just a bit short on Friday.   But it will be a long time before anyone forgets what this team accomplished.   Kado, Hawaii, played error-free ball in the field and manufactured just enough offense at the plate to earn a 5-1 victory at Glen Allen Stadium.   "It's been big," Morris Fried said after being named Pittsfield's MVP in the title game. "We've been working hard all summer, and to get this far — I'm really proud of these guys. We worked as a team. It's not just one person who got us here.   "It's

Pittsfield Personnel Review Board Approves New Positions
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:12AM / Friday, August 19, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Personnel Review Board on Wednesday voted to create emergency co-responders in the Police Department and two social worker positions: one in the police department and one in the Health Department.

This comes in the wake of increased homelessness and mental health distress and the police killing of Miguel Estrella in March.

There has been a call for greater mental health services since Estrella's death, with some community members arguing that alternatives to policing are needed and the co-responder should be separate from the PPD.

The fiscal 2023 budget included a $75,000 allocation for a social worker in the Health Department and a recommendation that

Every one of them do so with a baseball glove.   Prices have risen substantially since I was a kid. Today, the price of these baseball gloves can range from $20 to $400, depending on the kind of materials involved. Back in the day, most kids in my neighborhood kept their glove next to the bed. By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
06:00AM / Thursday, August 18, 2022
HENRICO, Va. — On Thursday night, the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars will get down to business.   On Wednesday afternoon, the mood was light as the squad held what is sure to be its last full practice of the season.   They kidded one another about their shoes, they reminisced about past games and past tournaments, someone came up with the notion of reviving old Little League dugout chants for Thursday's World Series semi-final, but that idea did not get much traction.   They were, for perhaps the last time in this current incarnation, the tight-knit sports family that has pulled together to achieve great heights in a game devotees call "the ultimate

04:27AM / Thursday, August 18, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Lake Onota Preservation Association (LOPA) is looking to construct a boat wash at Onota Lake to prevent the contamination of zebra mussels.

It will be submitting a co-sponsored application for Community Preservation Act funding in the fall after receiving the approval of the Parks Commission on Tuesday.

Douglas Spoehr of LOPA explained that the goal is to adopt best practices for boaters who have visited other lakes and have known risk factors for zebra mussels by providing them with an opportunity to wash down their boats with high-pressure steam.

The mussels are small freshwater species that have become invasive.
