Pittsfield Receives Grant to Expand Zoning Concept

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city has received more than $42,000 to expand the concept of the Downtown Creative District in the West Side and Morningside neighborhoods. The goal is to alleviate barriers caused by zoning and modernize the city's ordinance.

On Tuesday, the City Council accepted a $41,250 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for the endeavor. 

Depending on the budget, both neighborhoods may not make the cut but the focus is on the West Side.

Audit Advises DHE to Ensure Employees Receive Cybersecurity Training

BOSTON — the Office of State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump (OSA) released an audit of the Department of Higher Education (DHE), which identified that DHE did not ensure all employees responsible for managing and administering Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Funds, completed annual cybersecurity awareness training.    Additionally, the audit found DHE did not meet annually with the Commonwealth Commitment Advisory Board (CCAB) to review key aspects of the MassTransfer Commonwealth Commitment program. Fourth of July Festivities Include Parades, Fireworks

Festivities marking the nation's 243rd birthday will be held around the Berkshires. All events are on Thursday July 4, unless otherwise noted. Planning a trip to Boston? See MassDOT's traffic information.

The annual July 4 Esplanade Events are July 3 night practice (no fireworks) and Thursday night with fireworks following the Boston Pops, which begin at 8. This year's event features a flyover, Queen Latifah and Arlo Guthrie. MBTA usually runs free after the July 4 concert. More information here.

Lifeguards on Duty at Onota Lake beginning July 1

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Department of Community Development Recreation Program announced that lifeguards from the Berkshire Family YMCA will be on duty at Onota Lake, the public beach within Burbank Park, beginning Friday, July 1.   On Monday, July 4, lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. However, the schedule for beach supervision will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays through Aug.14.   Burbank Park is located at 500 Lakeway Drive. Local, State Officials Promote Forward Bill at Berkshire Innovation Center

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Local and state officials are urging the passage of the Future Opportunities for Resiliency, Workforce, and Revitalized Downtowns, or FORWaRD, bill that is expected to bring nearly $12 million to the city.

"It is essential and urgent that the Forward Act is passed so that we can get going on the shovel-ready projects that we have right in front of us," Mayor Linda Tyer said during a promotional event at the Berkshire Innovation Center on Thursday with state Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Michael Kennealy.

BHS Providing COVD-19 Vaccine for Infants and Toddlers

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — With the recent approval by the CDC of COVID-19 vaccination for children under the age of 5, Berkshire Health Systems has scheduled vaccine clinics for that population, while continuing to provide the vaccine for all other ages.    On Saturday, July 2, the BHS Testing and Vaccine Center in Pittsfield will hold its monthly COVID vaccine clinic for children 5 to 11, running from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.
