Pittsfield Council Sees $808K in Community Preservation FundsBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council last week saw 11 Community Preservation Act funding allocations totaling $808,547. They were referred to the Committee of the Whole for final approval.
An overall funding request of $1,614,363 across 14 projects was shaved down to partial funding for most of the projects, ranging from $7,881 to $175,000.
"Due to the large dollar amount of the requests, the Committee had to prioritize projects of the highest need and immediacy and reduce some funding requests while maintaining the feasibility of the projects," Director of Community Development Justine Dodds wrote in a communication to the council.

DALTON, Mass. — The lift for Town Hall has run into a conflict, Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator Alyssa Maschino informed the committee on Thursday. According to Hill Engineering, Town Hall could install a vertical lift in the Police Department's closet and go up into the town account's office. However, no one wants to give up the closet or office, she said. The lift has been out of service since December because of safety concerns.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The district has been alerted of a concerning trend that is prohibited on school grounds: Orby or Orbeez gel guns.
The toy guns shoot gel or water beads and are said to pose a risk of physical harm and being mistaken for a real firearm. They are a violation of the Pittsfield Public School's code of conduct and could result in a suspension of 11 days or more.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission has a "conservative" budget for fiscal year 2025 with a nearly 6 percent increase.
On Thursday, the commission approved a $6,640,005 budget for FY25, a $373,990 increase from the previous year. The spending plan saw less growth from FY24 to FY25, as the FY23 to FY24 increase was more than $886,000, or over 16 percent.
Executive Director Thomas Matuszko said there aren't any dramatic changes.

Ferraro clocked a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes flat on the Ashuwilticook Rail Trail course. He finished a little more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Nick Reid (2:46:15). Simone Veale won the race's women's division in a time of 3:18:42. She beat out Jill Hussain, who covered the course in 3:27:23. BOSTON, MA — May 17, 2024 – The state's April total unemployment rate was 2.9 percent, unchanged from the revised March estimate of 2.9 percent, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Friday. The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 1.0 percentage point lower than the national rate of 3.9 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Over-the-year, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down by 0.3 percentage points. The labor force increased by an estimated 12,200 from the revised estimate of 3,757,000 in March, with 10,100 residents more employed and 1,900 more residents unemployed over-the-month. The

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — One person was taken to Berkshire Medical Center following a multi-motor vehicle accident Saturday night at the Hubbard and Dalton avenues intersection. The crashes happened at 9:04 p.m. when a westbound Honda Accord on Dalton Avenue crossed the double yellow line, striking a Subaru sedan traveling east, causing it to spin out. DALTON, Mass. — The Board of Health approved a 90-day variance for Pizza Trails Food Truck to get a food manager's permit during its meeting last week. Pizza Trails owner Jake Sweener plans to operate in Dalton, in front of Downswing's Indoor Golf Center, on select Thursday nights when the truck is not already scheduled for another event. "Most of our Thursdays are already booked, and it's a pretty rare thing. It's kind of like a fill-in for us to supplement our income," he said. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — 2nd Street seeks submissions for Using Our Outside Voices, a literary project created in partnership with Berkshire Community College (BCC) that is designed to promote creativity, acceptance and inclusion for presently or formerly incarcerated men and women in Berkshire County.
