Pittsfield Police Chief Michael Wynn to Retire in JulyBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. After nearly 30 years with the city, Chief Michael Wynn will retire his badge after the Fourth of July to refocus his priorities. The announcement was made on Tuesday in Mayor Linda Tyer's office with his wife and infant child present. "I had been thinking about it for a couple of years now," Wynn said. "But obviously, recent changes in my family circumstances and family life, I had some minor health concerns this summer that caused me to reflect and reprioritize, and it's time." BOSTON — The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is alerting the public the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the REAL ID full enforcement date from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID compliant driver's license or identification card, or another TSA-acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel and to enter certain federal facilities. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Fire officials are investigating a structure fire at 11 Congress Street that resulted in the hospitalization of an occupant. On Dec. 6, at 1:41 am firefighters responded to a reported structure fire. E6, E3, E1, T2, and Car 2 all responded. Car2 was notified en route that there were possibly occupants trapped inside the 2-and-a-half-story house. Additionally, E5 responded. Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy fire showing from the rear of the wood-frame home. A three-season attached porch was fully involved along with the first-story kitchen.  LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Due to increased value of properties in town, the tax bill for the average property owner is expected to increase by 6.45 percent in fiscal 2023.
The Select Board unanimously voted Monday to maintain a single tax rate for the town, estimated to be $17.67 per $1,000 of assessed value, a $1.43 decrease from FY2022. But the average tax bill will rise by $322 to $5,313, compared to $4,991 in FY2022.
"[The tax rate] is down again this year for the second year in a row," said Town Assessor Ross Vivori. "And a lot of that is because of the growth that we've had and the real estate market that's driving those values up and pushing that tax rate

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Winter is upon us which comes along with many things including an increased amount of accidental emergency calls to emergency responders from ski resorts. The yearly occurrence of increased accidental calls are starting to come in, Hancock Emergency Management Director David Rash told the Central Berkshire Regional Emergency Planning Committee last week. When someone is injured on the mountain the procedure is to call the resort so that it can send ski patrol to assist the person, Rash said. PITTSFIELD, Mass. —The city is nearing its final stages of acquiring over 50 acres of conservation land along the southwest branch of the Housatonic River, also known as the Saw Mill property. On Thursday, the Conservation Commission authorized a project agreement to buy the property and use $50,000 from its trust fund for the $400,000 purchase.
The acquisition is supported by local and state funding.
"We are really excited about where we're at," Park, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath said.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A well-known local eatery is relaunching a second location with a new menu. Jae's Grill is planning a soft opening mid-week at 7 Winter St. The menu will feature upscale American cuisine, a change from the pan-Asian offerings of Jae's at the Hilton Garden Inn on South Street.
"It's a classy place but a homey place that you can come to," general manager Raya Stockton said, adding that it will have good food, good drinks, and a nice atmosphere.

From July 1 through Nov. 16, 2022, 2nd Street met with 158 unduplicated clients, including 27 who engaged in programming on reentry self-management life skills, workforce development skills training and continuing education. In that time period, only one client returned to custody. BOSTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $2.1 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reimburse the costs of keeping the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) open safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
