Pittsfield Officials Say Charter Objection Won't Stop Budget VoteBy Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A charter objection to the fiscal 2023 budget at the last City Council meeting did not completely wipe out the panel's recommendations, Mayor Linda Tyer confirmed on Thursday. Though the motion made by Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick "on behalf of Ward 2" adopted the originally presented budget by default, the council will be able to vote on the $116,000 of recommended increases on Tuesday. The city must pass a budget by July 1 or be forced to operate month by month with this year's budget. The budget will go back to Tyer and she will have the option to amend the budget to include the increases, which she has agreed to do if passed by the

DALTON, Mass. — A day after the Select Board voted to pull a $100,000 spending article from Monday's special town meeting, the Finance Committee recommended the other two money articles on the warrant. Article 1 authorizes the town to pay $8,643 in sewer and debt expenses not anticipated in time for the annual town meeting and Article 3 would move $2,066 from free cash to the Miscellaneous Grants account to cure a deficit. This is a deficit from a prior year so only a majority vote is required for this to pass. The tracks in downtown Pittsfield will see the arrival of the first Berkshire Flyer passenger train on July 8. Sen. Adam Hinds has also been pushing for high-speed rail service between Western and eastern Massachusetts. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshires will be directly connected next month to New York City through passenger rail service for the first time in more than 50 years. After five years of planning, the Berkshire Flyer will begin transporting people from New York's Penn Station to Pittsfield via Albany-Rensselaer in New York on July 8. Officials are celebrating this as an economic development project that will enhance one of the county's key sectors:

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The town's retired police chief, Timothy Sorrell, has been elected to a three-year term on the Select Board after winning Tuesday's annual town election. Sorrell won 407-253 over incumbent Gordon Hubbard. Sorrell, who served the department for 28 years before spending another six as chief, is also a member of the Police Station Building Committee and was recently appointed as a special police officer in Adams. Firefighters responded to the fire on Monday, June 22 at 12:30 am on. The caller reported that the two-story, four-family home was filling up with smoke. Upon arrival, the inhabitants were actively evacuating. Firefighters were directed to a downstairs apartment to find a resident who was not answering pleas to evacuate. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College student Martha Escobar has been honored with this year's 29 Who Shine Award for her work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and with the immigrant community. Escobar recently graduated from BCC with an associate degree in psychology and will go on to study social work at Elms College in Chicopee. On top of her studies, she works at the Elizabeth Freeman Center as a bilingual counselor and hosts a weekly show called "Mundo Latino" on Pittsfield Community Radio. She founded the
