@theMarket: September Is Tough Month for Equities
By Bill Schmick,
02:52PM / Friday, September 02, 2022
Since 1928, the S&P 500 Index has lost ground in September more than 55 percent of the time. It looks like this year will be true to form.   It is called "The September Effect" and no one market or news event has been responsible for this anomaly. Some attribute the negative results to seasonal behavior bias. After a good summer of gains, like this summer’s bear market rally, investors make portfolio changes and cash in on their gains.   Since 1950, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has booked a decline of 0.8 percent on average. If we go back further in history (since 1928), the S&P 500 Index has averaged a 1 percent decline during September. However, over

Barbalunga Campaign Says Election Post Was in Error
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
07:00PM / Thursday, September 01, 2022
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Barbalunga campaign says a volunteer made the now deleted post on Facebook alleging that the state was "closely" watching primary voting in Pittsfield.    "Shortly after the post was made by our campaign volunteer, a campaign leader saw the post, and it was immediately removed, due to being technically inaccurate," the campaign responded on Thursday evening.    But the post had prompted City Clerk Michele Benjamin to issue a release rebutting "irresponsible false claims about the integrity of the voting process" on Thursday.    She did not identify which candidate made the post or when it was

Pittsfield Police Board Quits in Protest
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
06:27PM / Thursday, September 01, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Five members of the Police Advisory Review Board have resigned, leaving only Lt. Col. Thomas Grady of the Sheriff's Department on the panel.

Chair Ellen Maxon confirmed on Thursday that being barred from reviewing the report on the fatal police shooting of Miguel Estrella was the final straw.

She, Michael Feldberg, Erin Sullivan, Marie Richardson, and Dennis Powell have called it quits on the PARB.

Last month, PARB was notified that its ordinance does not allow them to cover Estrella's report because the board is intended to "review all final investigative reports regarding citizen complaints."

This left members questioning its purpose

By Bill Schmick,
05:55PM / Thursday, September 01, 2022
Over the past seven decades, the U.S. government has embraced business. Both political parties and their leaders have continued and expanded a broad, business-friendly agenda. However, the judiciary tops the list when it comes to ruling in favor of American business.   In fact, the current Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) appears to top the tape in handing down favorable decisions to corporations and small business, according to a research paper by the Virginia Public Law and Legal Theory Research. The authors, Lee Epstein of the University of Southern California, and Mitu Guli at the University of Virginia School of Law compared the last decade and a half of Justice John

Dalton Board Discusses Possibility of New Wahconah Track
By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
12:42PM / Wednesday, August 31, 2022
Rich Peters, co-chair of the Wahconah building project, contacted iBerkshires on Thursday and said the track may have events next year but that the school could receive a warning and not be able to use it the following year if it was not fixed. The rubber, he said, was not so much peeling as worn off exposing asphalt, not cement, and the running shoes have micro spikes, not nails.    Most importantly, he noted that the $2 million being discussed by the board does not actually exist — it simply won't be borrowed.    "There will be no monies being returned to the towns," he wrote. "This only impacts the total amount that the
