Pittsfield Welcomes Officials from Sister City Ballina Ireland

Gifts were exchanged between the two Sister Cities at Tuesday's event, with Ballina Councillor Mark Duffy, right, and Irish Sister City Committee President Robert Dwyer. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Officials from sister city Ballina, Ireland, in Mayo County traveled to Pittsfield this weekend to experience its culture and build international relationships.

Ballina Municipal District Councillor Mark Duffy and Head of the District Declan Turnbull arrived on Saturday. Since then, they have been shown the ins and outs of the city, dined at Patrick's Pub, and even got to see its historical Fourth of July parade.

ACLU, NAACP Host 'Know Your Sheriff' Zoom Forum

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The NAACP's Berkshire County Branch, the League of Women Voters of Central Berkshire County, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts will host the forum "Know Your Sheriff" on Wednesday, July 6, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. 

"Know Your Sheriff" is a public education campaign by the ACLU of Massachusetts to build voter awareness about the life-changing decisions that sheriffs can make. According to the ACLUM, polling shows that many voters are not familiar with sheriffs — but when they learn more, they are more likely to cast a ballot for sheriff in the next election. Man Found Guilty, Sentenced For Pittsfield Domestic Disturbance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  A Berkshire Superior Court jury found 41-year-old Jason Ostrander guilty of intimidation of a witness following a two-day domestic violence trial.    On Tuesday, Judge Jane Mulqueen agreed with the Berkshire District Attorney's Office sentencing recommendation that Ostrander serve three to four years in state prison. Defense Counsel requested time served and probation.   On May 2, 2020, Pittsfield Police responded to a Pittsfield address for a reported domestic disturbance. Police arrested Ostrander for strangulation. While detained pretrial, Ostrander sent the victim a letter urging the victim not to testify in court against him. The

Fourth of July Fire Chars Morningside Multifamily Home

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A two-alarm structure fire on the Fourth of July charred the front portion of a Morningside multifamily but caused no injuries.

The blaze at 91-93 Orchard St. was reported at about 10 p.m. on Monday. Firefighters found heavy fire and smoke coming from the front of the building.

The home is a 2 1/2-story wood frame structure with three units that dates to 1900.

The Fire Department was told there might be children trapped in the building, and a second alarm was called to bring all on-duty fire personnel to the scene.

BCC Names Spring Dean's List Students

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announced it has named 240 students to the spring 2022 dean's list.    To be eligible for the dean's list, full-time students must achieve a GPA of 3.250 to 3.749 for an honors designation, while students with a GPA of 3.750 to 4.000 earn high honors. All dean's list students must have declared a major and must have completed at least 12 traditionally graded credit hours during a fall or spring semester of one academic year. Part-time students have the same eligibility requirements, except that the minimum 12 credit hours must be completed during one academic year.    The following 119 students

Westside Legends Hosts Annual All Roads Lead Home Event

Return of the Summer Outdoor Movie Series at Clapp Park

Berkshire Taconic Grant Funds BEAT Youth Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Crane Family Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation awarded $2,200 to Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT) in support of connecting kids with nature through programs in parks in the Westside of Pittsfield.    The grant will allow BEAT to purchase materials and plan programs that will give kids the opportunity to collect insects. the program will teach them how to collect in a safe and mindful way that is beneficial to themselves and the insects.    It will also allow teaching opportunities on pollination, biodiversity, and the importance of insects to the global ecosystem.

DALTON, Mass. -- Both Pittsfield 10-and-under Little League All-Star teams earned wins on Sunday at the Don Gleason District 1 Championships.   The Pittsfield American League All-Stars improved to 2-0 in the four-team round-robin tournament with a 12-4 win over Dalton-Hinsdale on Sunday.   Landon Murphy got the win on the mound and helped his cause with a single.   Brennan Lyon and Will Nichols each had two hits for the Americans.   For Dalton-Hinsdale (0-1), Cam Sievers had a pair of hits, and Leah Melle and Cam Wilds had a hit apiece.   The Pittsfield National League All-Stars downed Great Barrington, 11-4.   Seth Laprade picked up the win on the

Pittsfield Fourth of July Parade Coming 'Back With a Bang!'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city's historic Fourth of July Parade will return on Monday for the first time since 2019.

Themed "Back With a Bang," the procession will have 164 units.

"We have an arrangement of community groups, floats, fire departments, musical units, veterans organizations," parade Committee President Peter Marchetti said. "And, of course, the balloons."

For this year, the planners want to thank the community for its ongoing support with a grand celebration.
