Springfield Man Found Guilty of Shooting Pittsfield Woman in 2020

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Springfield man has been found guilty of shooting a woman two years ago.    Judge John Agostini found Myron Crapps, 31, guilty of assault and battery with a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm after a two-day trial. Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13s Reach New England Title Game

TRUMBULL, Conn. -- Eddie Ferris hit a two-run double in a seven-run seventh inning Tuesday as the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars pulled away for an 11-4 win over Tri-County, Maine, in the semi-finals of the New England Regional Championship.   The Maine state champs scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but Pittsfield scored three in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead for good.   Goo Stannard hit a line drive single to score Boo Socie to make it 3-3, and Christian Barry singled to drive in Stannard and give Pittsfield a 4-3 lead.   Barry finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs.   Connor Paronto, Ferris, Andrew Hammill,

Taconic's Student Voice Club Has Successful School Year, Looks for New Members

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Taconic High School's new student government organization had a number of accomplishments in the 2021-2022 school year and is looking to recruit more members for the next.

Founder William Garrity gave a presentation on the Taconic Student Voice Club at the last School Committee meeting.

The club's first project involved ensuring the future of a theater program that was seemingly at risk.

In late October it was announced that the nonprofit that provides funding to the school for theater programming, Save Our Shakespeare, was dissolving. This made students concerned that the school would not be able to participate in Shakespeare & Company's Fall

Christian Center Holds Community Day, Celebrates 130 Years

The Civitan Club has been providing picnic food for the event for a number of years.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A portion of Robbins Avenue was filled with a celebration on Saturday as the Christian Center held its annual Community Day and marked 130 years as an organization.

"To be honest, for the last 130 years, the Christian Center has done essentially the same thing," Executive Director  Betsy Sherman said, explaining that the center offers food, clothing, paths to jobs, and referrals to housing with the goal of helping people have a more secure life.

It was founded in 1892 as the Epworth Mission by the Methodist Church and has been at its current location since 1906.

Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-Year-Olds Advance to New England Semi-Finals

Local Organizations Unite to Address Food Insecurity, Chronic Illness

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Sheriff's Department, Berkshire Health Systems, and other partner organizations have teamed up to address food insecurity and chronic illness.

The Flexible Services Initiative is a free 10-week meal delivery and grocery program that aims to make a healthy diet accessible for everyone. Medically tailored meals are delivered to Berkshire County residents who suffer from chronic illness and/or struggle to put food on the table. 

This is a MassHealth funded program through participating Accountable Care Organizations, which in this case is Berkshire Fallon Health Collaborative.

Berkshire Museum Welcomes New Executive Director

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A museum administrator with more than three decades of experience with institutions in Texas and California is coming east to take the reins of the Berkshire Museum.    Kimberley Bush Tomio comes from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, where she was director of museum services for the past decade. Her hiring was announced on Monday by museum President Ethan Klepetar, on behalf of the board of trustees.   Her appointment as executive director comes nearly a year after the sudden departure of Jeff Rodgers last September after 2 1/2 years with the museum. Child Found in Onota Lake Taken to Baystate Medical Center

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An 8-year-old child rescued from Onota Lake on Sunday night was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Their condition is listed as stable, according to police.    The child was found unresponsive in the water by others at the public beach at Burbank Park and they began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. First-responders were notified of the emergency at about 4:58 p.m. and police, fire and County Ambulance responded to the scene.    Emergency workers took over rescue measures upon their arrival and the child was first taken to Berkshire Medical Center.    Anyone who wishes to provide information regarding this

Former Starbase Technologies Building Eyed for Cannabis Cultivation

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Cannabis cultivator Berkshire Kind is looking to put a grow facility in the former Starbase Technologies facility at the corner of Peck's and Valentine Roads.

The Community Development Board on Tuesday approved a site plan application for the adaptive re-use of the existing 37,700 square foot building with about 25,000 square feet of cultivation space.

It was approved with conditions related to odor management and a requirement of downward casting lights.
