Dalton Fire District Works to Improve Website

DALTON, Mass. — The Fire District is working on updating its website to improve community communication.    The district is working with local branding, website design, and digital marketing agency Gemini Creative to update the current website to make it Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and user friendly.    "We are light years ahead from where we need to be," Fire Chief Christian Tobin said during the Board of Water Commissioners meeting on Tuesday.    Gemini Creative is located in Stockbridge and, according to its website, is currently working with the Dalton Recreation Association, Berkshire Housing, and Dovecote

MountainOne to Launch Children's Book Featuring Mo the Spokesgoat

Air Quality Analysis Required for State Permits Near Certain Populations

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll administration moved to address air quality issues in or near environmental justice areas by announcing amendments to state air pollution regulations.

The changes require certain facilities seeking air emissions permits in or near communities with environmental justice populations to conduct a cumulative impact analysis, which evaluates existing local environmental and health conditions in a community. The regulations also require enhanced public outreach to, and meaningful involvement of, environmental justice populations in the permitting process. Governor Appoints Interim Chair of Gaming Commission

BOSTON — Today, Governor Maura Healey appointed Commissioner Jordan Maynard as Interim Chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, following the announcement of Cathy Judd-Stein's retirement.    The administration is in the process of searching for a permanent chair. Dalton Green Committee Aims to Obtain Data for Town Solar PV Arrays

DALTON, MASS. — The Green Committee is working to obtain information from Eversource to inform the possibility of developing solar polar photovoltaic arrays in town.    The committee approved using $250 during its meeting last week for a pre-application to Eversource. This application will provide data that will inform how to develop a solar PV array in town.   The efforts to develop PV arrays is supported by the state Department of Energy Resources' Green Communities initiative and has been part of the town's master plan since 2016.    One of the master plan's goals in the infrastructure section is to improve the town's energy

Berkshire County Historical Mark Centennial of 'Billy Budd, Sailor'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of Herman Melville's "Billy Budd, Sailor" with a series of events and programs throughout 2024.   According to a press release, the novella was written during the last five years of Melville's life, but remained unknown until 1918 when Melville's first biographer Raymond M. Weaver was shown the handwritten manuscript by Melville's granddaughter, Eleanor Melville Metcalf. Pittsfield School Officials Dig Into 'Not Ideal' FY25 Budget

EPA Analysis Shows 2022 Decrease of Toxic Chemical Releases

BOSTON — Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its 2022 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis showing that environmental releases of TRI chemicals from facilities covered by the program were 21 percent lower in 2022 compared to 2013.

This includes a 26 percent decrease in air releases. During this 10-year period, releases from manufacturing facilities decreased by 9 percent while the value added to the U.S. economy from manufacturing increased by 14 percent. While overall releases increased by 1 percent from 2021 to 2022, there was a 6.5 percent increase in the number of pollution prevention activities reported under the TRI program compared to

Berkshire Gas Workers Picket to Over Contract Talks

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Unionized Berkshire Gas employees picketed outside of the facility on Thursday, saying they are asking for favorable work conditions, wages, and benefits.

"We are currently involved in contract negotiations with our union members and we are hopeful that an agreement beneficial to all parties will be reached soon," said Sarah Wall Fliotsos, a Berkshire Gas spokesperson.

Michael Ferriter, a retiree of the gas company and 20-year president of United Steelworkers Local 12325, spoke on behalf of the workers. The contract expires on March 31 and the union would like to get a new agreement ratified in a timely manner.
