Central Berkshire's MCAS Scores Rank Higher than State

DALTON, Mass. — Central Berkshire Regional School District is one of 13 districts in the state recognized for exceeding pre-pandemic MCAS scores.    "Central Berkshire is also beating the state in percentages of students meeting or exceeding expectations [and its] science scores are the best in the county," said Ellen Lattizzori, curriculum subcommittee chair.    Rather than holding a three-hour meeting, the district decided to present the data on each school during a curriculum subcommittee meeting last month. Pittsfield Sewer Lining Replacement Projects

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City's Department of Public Services and Utilities announces a sewer lining replacement project will resume on Monday, Dec. 1 and continue over the next few weeks.    Additional updates will be shared on a weekly basis.   The sewer lining will be replaced in several locations as outlined in the schedule below during the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each weekday. This work includes lining aging sewer pipes to help prevent future breaks within the sewer line. There should be minimal to no impact on residential sewer lines during this work. Dalton Police Accepting Letters to North Pole

The Dalton Police have materials from the North Pole to aid in responding to letters from Santa.  DALTON, Mass. — The police station is filled with holiday cheer as officers get involve with the seasonal activities.    Every year, officers and department staff become Santa's elves through the "Letters from Santa" and "Santa for Seniors" projects.    Perched outside the station's door sits a little red mailbox for families to drop off their letters to the merry man in red.    The initiative began about five years ago, when Police Chief Deanna Strout saw a similar mailbox at Target.   Strout and Rebecca Whitaker,

BRTA Extends Senior Rural Fare-Free Rides, Gives Employees Bonus

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority will make rides free through next June and give its employees a thank-you bonus.   The vote was taken last week by the BRTA Advisory Board during its discussion of its fiscal year 2025 supplemental grant of $724,000 from the state Department of Transportation.   Some $14,000 of the grant will go toward making non-ADA rides fare free starting in December and going through June.    This will give seniors in rural areas transportation, which is currently not fare free.   "I was speaking with someone in Peru, and it would cost them $30 each time they would have to go to the doctor's office for

RMV: Beware of Scam Texts

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is alerting the public to a scam circulating currently which involves texts stating a person owes money for outstanding motor vehicle violations and that the individual should contact the RMV immediately. 

The RMV will never text residents looking for payment for fines or for transactions.  The RMV only accepts payments in-person or on the official RMV website: www.mass.gov/RMV.

"Scam artists often create urgency to manipulate members of the public into paying fees which are fraudulent and we urge everyone to be vigilant when they receive a communication stating they owe money,"

Local High School Football Officials Head to Gillette Stadium

The Berkshire County Football Officials Association is pleased to announce a crew of eight of its members will work one of eight state championship games at Gillette Stadium this week.   The local crew will officiate the Division 7 game on Thursday at 5 p.m. between Amesbury and Cohasset.   The crew includes: Rick Ciampa, referee; Josh Healy, umpire; Michael Rooney, line judge; Reggie Leonard, head linesman; David Jordan, back judge; Matt Emerson, side judge; Chuck Poulton, field judge; and Aaron Kipp, game clock operator.

Snow Angel Volunteers Needed in Pittsfield This Winter

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield seeking volunteers for its third annual Snow Angels program.   The city created this program to help community members who have difficulty cleaning up sidewalks after a big snowstorm.   "It was created back in 2023 to help meet the need of those who live in our city, whether they're seniors, individuals with disabilities, or maybe they have limited mobility or don't have the financial means to hire someone to assist them with snow removal," said Recreation & Special Events Coordinator Jennifer Vanbramer.   Residents and businesses are responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of their properties in a timely manner.
