PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A small group of educators explored ways to integrate local history into lesson plans at Arrowhead on Tuesday. The "More Than Melville" workshop at author Herman Melville's home presented teachers with educational opportunities at local historical organizations, covering topics such as civics, artifact collections, and Native American history.
It was part of the countywide professional development day sponsored by Berkshire Educational Resources K12, which engaged more than 1,000 teachers in around 50 different daylong workshops.

Supporters ready to welcome state Senate winner Paul Mark at Patrick's Pub on Tuesday night. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Paul Mark will move out of the House and down the hall to the state Senate this January. A six-term representative of the 2nd Berkshire District, the Democrat was leading his Republican opponent Brendan Phair of Pittsfield by nearly 60 percent with more than a third of precincts reporting on Tuesday night. Around 50 supporters rallied for Mark at Patrick's Pub on Tuesday night.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire County Historical Society has received a grant from Housatonic Heritage to host Berkshire Writers Workshop Series – a new series of writing workshops beginning Nov. 19 and continuing monthly through May. Each three-hour session will take place at Herman Melville's historic Arrowhead and be led by a different writer/facilitator of note for a series of informative, inspiring, and productive writing workshops. The program will facilitate different aspects of writing in varying genres using prompts and exercises that enhance the writing process. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The school policy subcommittee voted to adopt a revised Mission, Vision, Core Values policy after making two amendments during its meeting on Monday afternoon. Member William Cameron proposed amending the draft to add "Academic Excellence" as a new section in the policy. The revised section now says the public schools commit to "supporting a community that creates and sustains an atmosphere of intellectual excitement, high student achievement, critical thinking, innovative effective instruction, strong communication, and personal responsibility and growth." PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA) announced that beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 31, 2022, all BRTA bus and paratransit services will be free through the state's "Try Transit" initiative. This Try Transit initiative is supported through the state budget and awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The state grant was awarded to all 15 Commonwealth regional transit authorities who worked together to submit a joint application and implementation plan. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Councilor at Large Karen Kalinowksy and a city resident continued their push to make chicken keeping more affordable in the city on Monday. The Ordinance and Rules subcommittee tabled a request to amend the zoning ordinance for keeping chickens so that they could explore different options that were presented to them.
The panel agreed that the multi-step, over $500 process is excessive but was unsure of the best way to fix it. A popular suggestion was to make the process similar to $20 annual dog licensing, which City Solicitor Stephen Pagnotta will look into along with a $200 site plan approval.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is auctioning off a 10-acre site zoned for light industrial on Route 20 this Thursday. Pittsfield took control of 1685 West Housatonic St. three years in foreclosure. It was formerly owned by Arace Realty Trust. About three acres of the site is developed, including a 30,000-square-foot building that has retail and warehouse space. The property is near the junction of Route 41, a gateway to the city. It has provisions for commercial and industrial uses. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Funding Focus (BFF), a new initiative established to support Berkshire County entities seeking federal and state funds for pandemic-related recovery and rebuilding, launched its website in November. Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and several partner agencies joined to form BFF in response to a need for a clearinghouse focused on the investment of COVID-19 recovery dollars into the region, to improve the well-being of community members. PITTSFIELD, Mass. Haddad Subaru and Berkshire Humane Society raised $72,000 during their rabies and microchip clinic in October. During the event, Dr. Charlotte Barkley of Pittsfield Veterinary Hospital administered approximately 50 vaccines and 50 Microchips to cats and dogs. The funding for this clinic was provided by Subaru Loves Pets-specific grant. John Perrault of the Berkshire Humane Society and Chris Kramek, General Manager of Haddad Subaru pulled the winner of the "Choose Your Subaru Raffle," and Barry Collins of Lanesboro was the winner of a 2023 Subaru.
