Free Webinar Looks at the Intersection of Smoking and Food Insecurity
07:55AM / Wednesday, August 03, 2022
DALTON, Mass. — Smokers, on average, pay about $11 for a pack of cigarettes. So, if they stop, lower-income smokers should have more money. Right?    But the calculation isn't that simple when other stress factors are considered, such as food insecurity.    "You have to understand that when people are addicted to nicotine, nicotine may serve a couple of functions, smokers may feel, it helps them reduce stress," said Joyce Brewer, manager of Berkshire AHEC's Tobacco-Free Community Partnership Program. "Or if they are food insecure, it might staunch the feeling that they're hungry so that they have enough to feed their

Pittsfield Historical Commission Vote to Urge Miss Hall to Preserve the Weston House
By Sabrina Damms, iBerkshires Staff
05:13AM / Tuesday, August 02, 2022
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission on Monday voted to give the nearly 200-year-old Weston House at Miss Hall's School "preferable preserve" status after an extensive discussion between the public and the commissioner.   The private school on Holmes Road is considering demolishing the structure, saying the estimated half-million cost to renovate it is too high.   But the commissioners determined that since people are still able to live in the house, there isn't an urgent need to raze it.    Head of School Julia Heaton and Jeff Crosier, manager of campus services, said decision on how to handle the house had not been made despite the

By Brian Rhodes, iBerkshires Staff
06:36PM / Monday, August 01, 2022

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Lanesborough Police Department has officially moved to its temporary location at 545 South Main St., as the department still waits for a brand-new station.

The department's been slowly transferring items in over the past days and, with Monday's installation of a landline, the police have officially moved in.

The move, official as of Aug. 1, comes after the $65,000 lease for the temporary space was approved by the Select Board in April. Necessary work for the location was minimal, meaning the department was able to begin the process of moving in soon after.

"I'm very appreciative to everyone that

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
04:07PM / Monday, August 01, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — District leaders continue to push for Taconic to become a vocational school, reporting that the four-year-old facility is quickly outgrowing the secondary model.

The School Committee at its last meeting continued this conversation that started about two years ago.  In March, it was recommended that the school move toward the all-vocational model beginning next year.

The transition would start with Taconic only accepting Career Technical Education (CTE) students in the fall of 2023. Non-CTE students in Grades 10 through 12 would remain at the school and by the fall of 2026, the whole student body would be vocational.

"Taconic High School is growing out

People have been shifting their Bird use from joyriding to work and errands over the past three months.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — When the Bird electric scooters swooped into Pittsfield back in April there were some that cheered the effort but more than few quickly took to Facebook to prophesy disaster — thefts, accidents and littering of the vehicles.    And who would use them?   But a call to the police earlier this month turned up no recorded complaints. Instead, the Birds have been averaging a total of 145 rides a day.    Bird tapped Pittsfield in April to initiate this new method of eco-friendly, affordable transportation for
