Flushing of Pittsfield's Water System to Begin| 11:04AM / Thursday, April 18, 2024 | |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Department of Public Utilities announces that phase 1 of the flushing of the city's water system will begin Monday, April 22. Water mains throughout the city will be flushed, through hydrants, over the upcoming weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products. Mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, except holidays, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The upcoming flushing for April 22 to May 3 is expected to affect the following areas: Starting at the town line on Dalton Avenue working west through Coltsville including lower Crane Avenue, Meadowview neighborhood, following Cheshire 0 Comments

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City of Pittsfield's Cable Advisory Committee is conducting an online survey to gain insight into the needs of the Pittsfield community with regards to the Charter Spectrum Cable Television License. The cable company's license with the city expires on September 30, 2024. The committee seeks to gather input and information from a wide variety of residents to gauge their experiences and reactions to the level of service provided by Charter Spectrum, and the impact of Public, Education, and Government ("PEG") access provided by Pittsfield Community Television.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — It is the "end of the road" for a kayak kiosk proposal after pushback from community members and the City Council.
Whenever Watersports has withdrawn its proposal for a kayak rental program at Onota Lake. Safety concerns arose around the company's self-serve model though it was stipulated that users sign liabilities away with a waiver as part of the process.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The woman who was rescued when her home caught fire on Monday has died. The Berkshire District Attorney's Office confirmed on Tuesday that Susan Steenstrup, 67, died after she was pulled from the blaze at 1 Marlboro Drive. The cause of death has not been confirmed. Steenstrup was found on the second-floor by firefighters who responded to the blaze at about 6:45 p.m. She was taken by County Ambulance to Berkshire Medical Center. The two-story, 1930s home is coned off and shows signs of the emergency response such as a broken front window where crews entered to rescue Steenstrup. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Cheshire man charged with numerous counts of child pornography and sexual assault was released on $100,000 cash bail on Tuesday. Brian Warner, 37, was ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device and to have no contact with the victim or their family, residence or school and no contact with anyone under the age of 18. Warner was arraigned on April 11 in Berkshire Superior Court on 51 counts of child abuse after being indicted by a grand jury in March. He has pleaded not guilty. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Department of Community Development Parks and Recreation Program will be hosting two community Arbor Day events to celebrate the life and achievements of Robert L. Presutti. Presutti is a longtime city resident who volunteered many hours with both the Parks Department and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The first ceremony will take place on Friday, April 26 at 12 p.m. at the Berkshire Athenaeum, Bartlett Avenue side of the building. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Following clashing viewpoints from the former City Council and Board of Health on mosquito spraying, the city has set a community meeting on April 29 to discuss its management plan.
The 6 p.m. presentation at the Berkshire Athenaeum will include the city's current mosquito management plan, a brief history, and an overview of regional mosquito management practices. Residents will have an opportunity to speak afterward.
Mosquito control has been a controversial topic over the last few years after adulticide spraying was discontinued in 2021. A request to repeal that action failed at the council level last year.

 BOSTON, Mass. -- Laura Stephen of Great Barrington finished 26th in the women's 60-64 age group at Monday's Boston Marathon, the top Berkshire County finisher in their division at the 128th running of the event. Stephen crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 42 minutes, 52 seconds, 12,633rd in the overall field of more than 30,000 runners who made the trek from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston. More than a dozen Berkshire County residents are listed among the finishers on the Boston Athletic Association website.
