Application Deadline Announced for BCC Associate Degree in Nursing

PITTSFIELD, Mass — Berkshire Community College announces a deadline of Thursday, September 1 to apply for the spring semester cohort of the Associate Degree in Nursing program.    The program accepts up to 60 students fills quickly. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early. Pittsfield Looks into the Future of Wahconah Park

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is embarking on a more than $3 million capital improvement plan for historic Wahconah Park with a restoration committee and a promise of federal funds.

The City Council voted at its June 28 meeting to establish a Wahconah Park Restoration Committee.  

The nine-member committee will assess the current condition of the 75-year-old facility, solicit public input, recommend the specifics of the repairs, and make recommendations to the city on the hiring of project agents.

In April it was announced that grandstand seating would not be available this year because the steel structure was compromised.

Fields, Melle Lead Teams into Little League Tourney Title Games

Leah Melle and Kaelyn Fields led their respective Little League baseball teams to championship games in the Don Gleason District 1 Tournaments on Thursday night.   Melle hit an inside-the-park home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth and give Dalton-Hinsdale’s 10-year-old All-Stars a 7-6 win over Great Barrington.   Fields went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and threw 3-? perfect innings to lead the Pittsfield National Division 11-year-olds to a 13-1 win over Great Barrington.   Those wins put the Dalton 10s and Pittsfield National 11s into Saturday’s title games – both against squads from the Pittsfield American Division.   The Pittsfield Americans played

The Biden administration is wrestling with whether to ease some of the Chinese import tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese goods. If they do, it would mark the first step in reconciling the trade differences between the world's two largest economies and could even nudge down the inflation rate.   The trade war is now over four years old and substantial tariffs remain. "To what end," some may ask, as certain deadlines approach. The first tranche of the Section 301, China imports tariffs on $34 billions of goods, is set to expire this week. Another $16 billion worth of tariffs will expire on Aug. 23 followed by $100 billion of tariffs on Sept.

Return of Pittsfield's Summer Playground Program

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield Department of Community Development Recreation Program has announced the return of the Parks Summer Playground Program at three city parks for six weeks beginning Monday, July 11.   The Summer Playground Program offers a variety of recreation activities for Pittsfield children ages 6 to 13 free of charge.   Playground leaders create safe, supervised and fun-filled environments with activities including sports, games, arts and crafts, and nature activities.   Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sheriff Candidates Answer Community's Questions at Forum

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The candidates for Berkshire County sheriff answered questions from the community in a forum held by the Berkshire County NAACP, the League of Women Voters, and the ACLU of Massachusetts on Wednesday.

Incumbent Thomas Bowler and his challenger Alf Barbalunga were queried on the interworkings of the office and their stances on national issues related to the position during the Zoom event.

"I always talk about how important elections are, and I always talk about the political scene. We know that there's nothing more important than local politics," Berkshire NAACP President Dennis Powell said.

Pittsfield Squads Roll Up Double-Digit Wins

ADAMS, Mass. – A pair of Pittsfield Little League squads Wednesday gave the scoreboard a workout at “Beaver” Bard Field in the Don Gleason District 1 Tournament.   In the 11-year-old division, the Pittsfield American Division All-Stars scored 10 first-inning runs en route to a 26-0, three-inning win over Great Barrington.   In the 12-year-old tourney, the Pittsfield National Division scored 13 times in the top of the sixth to break the game open and cruise to a 20-0 win over Dalton-Hinsdale.   Mateo Fox gave up one hit in a three-inning “complete game” shutout for the Americans.   For the Nats, Jason Fields and Kevin Smith combined to strike

Pittsfield Welcomes Officials from Sister City Ballina Ireland

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Officials from sister city Ballina, Ireland, in Mayo County traveled to Pittsfield this weekend to experience its culture and build international relationships.

ACLU, NAACP Host 'Know Your Sheriff' Zoom Forum

Man Found Guilty, Sentenced For Pittsfield Domestic Disturbance

PITTSFIELD, Mass. —  A Berkshire Superior Court jury found 41-year-old Jason Ostrander guilty of intimidation of a witness following a two-day domestic violence trial.    On Tuesday, Judge Jane Mulqueen agreed with the Berkshire District Attorney's Office sentencing recommendation that Ostrander serve three to four years in state prison. Defense Counsel requested time served and probation.   On May 2, 2020, Pittsfield Police responded to a Pittsfield address for a reported domestic disturbance. Police arrested Ostrander for strangulation. While detained pretrial, Ostrander sent the victim a letter urging the victim not to testify in court against him. The
