Pittsfield Committees Vote on Crosby/Conte SOI This Week

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two of the three votes needed to move forward with a proposal for a combined elementary school build will be made this week.

The School Building Needs Commission will vote Tuesday on the submission of a statement of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Association for Crosby Elementary School and Conte Community School. The School Committee will tackle it on Wednesday, ahead of the April 12 deadline.

The City Council is expected to make a decision on March 26.

The two outdated facilities have insufficient layouts and are in need of significant repair. The proposal rebuilds both schools on the Crosby site with some shared facilities.

Allegrone Requests Tax Incentive for North Street Project

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A tax increment exemption has been proposed for Allegrone Construction Co.'s $18 million overhaul of two North Street properties.

Tuesday's City Council agenda includes a requested 10-year TIE for the $17.8 million project that redevelops the historic Wright Building and the Jim's House of Shoes property.

The project will combine the two buildings into one development, retaining the commercial storefronts on North Street and providing 35 new rental units, 28 of which will be market-rate units and seven of which will be affordable units.

Zion Lutheran Church Hosting German Dinner

BCC Awarded Funds For Workforce Training Programs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced they are awarding $1.5 million in grants for new community college workforce training programs for adults looking to enter or re-enter the workforce.    The grants, which are part of the Training Resources and Internships Network (TRAIN) program, are being issued to 13 community colleges across Massachusetts to prepare residents for careers in fields such as education, health care, addiction recovery, cyber security, and manufacturing. Dalton Planners Explore Tiny Home Amendment to ADU Bylaw

DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board will be discussing the possibility of amending the current Accessory Dwelling Units bylaws to include tiny homes during its meeting next week.    During the board's meeting in February, Tiny Home Industry Association President Dan Fitzpatrick joined the meeting via Zoom to give a presentation on tiny homes.    Fitzpatrick is interested in working with the town to amend its bylaws to permit movable tiny homes especially as Accessory Dwelling Units. State Celebrates Spay/Neuter Voucher Program

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) announced that it has reached a milestone of helping more than 20,000 animals through its Spay/Neuter Voucher Program.

Since 2012, MDAR's Division of Animal Health has administered vouchers through the Massachusetts Animal Fund (Fund), providing critical veterinary care to over 13,300 cats and dogs owned by low-income Massachusetts residents, 3,600 cats and dogs housed in municipal animal control facilities, 1,100 community cats, and 2,400 cats and dogs in high-risk situations due to disease outbreaks or inhumane conditions.

State February Revenue Collections Over $2 Billion

BOSTON, Mass. — Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) Commissioner Geoffrey Snyder today announced that preliminary revenue collections for February totaled $2.007 billion, $27 million or 1.3 percent more than actual collections in February 2023, but $11 million or 0.6 percent below benchmark.   FY2024 year-to-date collections totaled approximately $23.467 billion, which is $186 million or 0.8 percent less than collections in the same period of FY2023, and $275 million or 1.2 percent less than the year-to-date benchmark.   "February collections increased in income tax withholding and corporate and business tax in comparison to February 2023," said Commissioner

State Unemployment and Job Estimates for January 2024

BOSTON, Mass. — The state's January total unemployment rate was 3.0 percent, down 0.2 percentage point from the revised December estimate of 3.2 percent, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced Friday.    The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 0.7 percentage points lower than the national rate of 3.7 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Over-the-year, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down by 0.5 percentage points.   The labor force grew by an estimated 400 from the revised estimate of 3,749,900 in December, with 8,000 more residents employed and 7,600 fewer residents unemployed over-the-month.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City officials and community members showed love to Pittsfield Community Television ahead of negotiations for the cable contract.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Massachusetts

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources' (MDAR) Division of Animal Health is informing the public that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected in Essex County.   MDAR recently depopulated and disposed of a non-commercial, backyard flock (poultry) in Essex County, Massachusetts, due to HPAI.  Birds on the affected premises exhibited clinical signs consistent with HPAI, and samples tested positive for the disease.   MDAR urges backyard and commercial poultry owners to practice strong biosecurity measures to prevent domestic poultry from coming into contact with wild birds, their feathers, and droppings.
