Pittsfield Firefighters Contain North St. Blaze

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to 664/666 North St. for smoke showing from the same address.    Engine 2 arrived and found fire showing from the exterior rear of the 2-1/2 story, wood frame, 4 family apartment building. E2 crew pulled a 1-3/4" handline and attacked the main body of fire.   The department's  response consisted of E3, E2, E5, Truck 2, and Car2. E1 responded to scene as a rapid intervention crew. While E2 extinguished all visible fire, E3 conducted a primary search of the building, E5 secured water supply, and T2 assisted with checking for fire extension.   The fire was

Pittsfield Lights Now 12-Foot Christmas Tree

Events coordinator Jennifer VanBramer says the annual tree lighting has been held since 1945. 

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city lit its permanent Christmas tree, now 12 feet tall, to dozens of cheering community members on Friday. 

The annual tree lighting ceremony drew adults and children to Park Square as they waited for Santa and Mrs. Claus to arrive. It has been a Pittsfield tradition for 80 years, and a dedicated Christmas tree was planted in 2023. 

"This event has been a long-standing Pittsfield tradition since 1945, and every year it reminds us just how special our city truly is," Recreation & Special Events Coordinator Jennifer VanBramer

Dalton Sale of Bardin Property Challenged

DALTON, Mass. — The sale of the last parcel of the land known as the Bardin property is being challenged.    The town received four bids on the property: $30,000, $31,500, $51,000, and $51,510. Dicken Crane of Holiday Farm was the highest bidder at $51,510 but was not awarded the parcel. The 9.15-acre property is located off Route 9, right on the town line of Windsor.    During a Select Board meeting on Nov. 10, the board awarded the final parcel to Thomas and Esther Balardini, who purchased the two other parcels that were under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction for $150,000. ServiceNet Warming Shelter Open and Busy

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Community members can escape the harsh temperatures and have a hot beverage at ServiceNet's warming shelter, which began in November and has been busy since. 

Erin Forbush, ServiceNet's director of shelter and housing, said people will typically trickle in when a shelter opens. That was not the case for the pop-up space in First United Methodist Church's dining area, next to ServiceNet's 40-bed shelter, The Pearl.

"This year, we had 23 people on day one, so I think that really is a telltale sign of days to come," Forbush told the Homelessness Advisory Committee on Wednesday.

MassDOT Extends Deadline for 'Name A Snowplow' Contest
