Two Live Debates for District Attorney Candidates Aug. 15| 08:31AM / Friday, August 05, 2022 | |
PITSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield Community Television, in partnership with iBerkshires.com, will present live debates for the Berkshire County Sheriff and Berkshire County District Attorney races. The debates will both take place on Monday, August 15th, in the auditorium at the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield. The first debate will feature Berkshire County Sheriff candidates Thomas Bowler and Alf Barbalunga at 6 p.m. and the second debate of the evening will be for Berkshire County District Attorney candidates Andrea Harrington and Tim Shugrue. The DA’s debate will begin at 7:30 pm. The debates are moderated by representatives of iBerkshires and Pittsfield Community

PITTSFIELD, Mass.- There is a new taco in town.
Chipotle Mexican Grill opened in Taco Bell's former location in Berkshire Crossing on Thursday. To mark the occasion, the first 50 people in line received merchandise from the chain restaurant. Shortly after its doors opened, the eatery was buzzing with customers.
"We have received great feedback from other Chipotle locations surrounding the area and think Pittsfield’s burrito fan would be thrilled to have their own Chipotle location," Spokesperson Sally Evans said.
Along with a modern renovation of the building, there is a "Chipotlane" drive-thru lane that allows customers to retrieve digital orders from

Secretary of state candidate Tanisha Sullivan opened the event. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Incumbent Andrea Harrington and challenger Timothy Shugrue spoke on the role of the district attorney, equity, and drug prosecution during a forum on Wednesday. It was held by the Berkshire NAACP, the League of Women Voters of Central Berkshire County, the League of Women Voters of Williamstown, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts.

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Maroons and the Crows survived Wednesday’s semi-finals in the Pittsfield Soccer League with a pair of 1-0 wins at Wahconah Park. The second-seeded Crows used a first-half goal from James Pow to knock off Barcelona. On an adjacent field, Matt Naventi scored a first-half goal to send the Maroons past the Vultures and into next Wednesday’s league championship game. Eight teams began play this summer in the 10-year-old league. PSL organizer Nigel Gayle said that about 130 players participated in the weekly seven-on-seven contests.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The outside of a Second Street home was damaged on Monday after it was accidentally ignited with a blowtorch. Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at 125 Second St. at about 5:30 p.m. and found smoke and a blaze coming from the front of the single-family home.
With quick work, the first responders were able to keep the fire from penetrating the building.
Three engines and one ladder responded to the scene, with Engine 1 extinguishing the fire on the exterior, Engine 2 securing the water supply and checking to see if the fire had spread, and Engine 3 checking the interior of the home for fire.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city is looking to cap its cost of living adjustment after the consumer price index reached 7.5 percent in January. On Monday, the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee unanimously voted to cap the COLA at 5 percent for non-union employees. It will go to the full City Council next week for a final vote.
"Earlier this year during budget deliberations when those started for fiscal year 23, the mayor had indicated we would be putting this forward to you as we saw the highest cost of living adjustments that the city has seen yet, 7.5 percent," Director of Human Resources Michael Taylor explained.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Historical Commission on Monday voted to give the nearly 200-year-old Weston House at Miss Hall's School "preferable preserve" status after an extensive discussion between the public and the commissioner. The private school on Holmes Road is considering demolishing the structure, saying the estimated half-million cost to renovate it is too high.  LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Lanesborough Police Department has officially moved to its temporary location at 545 South Main St., as the department still waits for a brand-new station. The department's been slowly transferring items in over the past days and, with Monday's installation of a landline, the police have officially moved in. The move, official as of Aug. 1, comes after the $65,000 lease for the temporary space was approved by the Select Board in April.  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — District leaders continue to push for Taconic to become a vocational school, reporting that the four-year-old facility is quickly outgrowing the secondary model. The School Committee at its last meeting continued this conversation that started about two years ago. In March, it was recommended that the school move toward the all-vocational model beginning next year.
The transition would start with Taconic only accepting Career Technical Education (CTE) students in the fall of 2023. Non-CTE students in Grades 10 through 12 would remain at the school and by the fall of 2026, the whole student body would be vocational.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Walmart store at Berkshire Crossing was closed for hours Monday morning for a coolant leak. According to a Fire Department report, an employee accidentally damaged a freon line to one of the large commercial refrigeration units. Firefighters initiated a Tier 1 hazardous materials action and notified the hazmat team. Tier 1 means the materials involved can be contained or extinguished by first-responders. It assumes minimal risk to the public and the environment. The regional hazmat team coordinated the cleanup with the Fire Department.
