PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield police are investigating an apparent homicide that took place late Sunday evening on Wellington Avenue.

Police received several 911 calls shortly after 11:30 p.m. reporting gun shots and a man down in the middle of Wellington Avenue. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and found 23-year-old Nikolas S. Carnute of Pittsfield lying in the street.

Carnute was rushed to Berkshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy, to determine the cause of death, will be conducted at the office of the chief medical examiner in Boston on Tuesday.

Investigators are seeking a white sedan, possibly a Pontiac, with a rear spoiler seen fleeing from the scene, and are asking anyone who may have witnessed this attack or who might have information about the vehicle to contact the Pittsfield Police Department at 413-448-9700.

Carnute was charged in a stabbing incident on Burbank Street five years ago.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Pittsfield Police Department.
