State Police Bust $3M Illegal Pot Growing Operation in Savoy

Troopers say they confiscated nearly 3,600 marijuana plants with a street value of more than $3 million. The grow operation was using $10,000 a month in electricity. SAVOY, Mass. — State Police say they have busted an illegal pot operation in the small hilltown and seized more than $3 million worth of plants.    According to troopers with Cheshire barracks, an investigation into suspicious activity on Jackson Road resulted in the discovery of the growing operation and resulted in the arrest of two New York State men: Yebin Mai, 28, of Staten Island and Bin Huang, 32, of Brooklyn.   Troopers were assisted by members of the Berkshire

North Adams Man Falls From Ledge in Savoy Forest

SAVOY, Mass. — Numerous emergency responders came to the rescue of a 26-year-old North Adams man who fell off a ledge on Sunday in the Savoy State Forest.

The Savoy Volunteer Fire Department reports that it was called to Tannery Falls at about 6 p.m. on Sunday with Adams Ambulance Service for a report of a man who was unconscious after falling 40 feet near the falls.

Mutual aid was requested from Cheshire, Windsor and Plainfield volunteer fire departments and the Berkshire County High Angle Rescue Team for extrication. LifeNet or LifeFlight were also requested but unable to respond because of weather issues

Savoy's 'Dragon House' Burns Down

SAVOY, Mass. — The Dragon House, a local landmark burned down over the weekend

The odd-shaped building topped with a dragon head chimney was the home of the late Roger Davis, also known as Witch Vortex, a noted recluse, teacher and handyman. Davis' wooden statues of deities were featured in 2007 in Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art's "The Believers" exhibition.

Davis, who died in January at age 74, had constructed the buildings and grounds over 20 years but reportedly had not lived there in several years. There was no electricity or modern conveniences on the property.

Firefighters Snuff Out Savoy Chimney Fire

SAVOY, Mass. — Firefighters snuffed out Friday what could have been a dangerous fire.

"It could have been [bad] if we didn't get here in time," Savoy Fire Chief Lawrence Ordyna said. "It appeared that it had gotten into the walls and once that determination is make, we call a first-alarm fire."

The chimney fire was quickly snuffed out with fire Departments from Adams, Cheshire, Florida, Windsor, Hinsdale and Plainfield all responded to Main Road home at about noon. The home suffered minimal damage and there were no injuries, Ordyna said.

North Adams Woman Charge With Trafficking

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A North Adams woman was arraigned Friday morning in Berkshire Superior Court on a drug charge. 

Eden J. Lemaire, 20, of Walnut Street had not-guilty pleas entered on her behalf on single counts of trafficking in Oxycontin and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

She appeared before Judge John A. Agostini, who released her on personal recognizance.

The charges stem from the execution of a search warrant at the Willows Motel in Williamstown on April 2, 2010. The investigation was conducted by members of the Adams, North Adams and Williamstown police departments and state troopers assigned to the district attorney's office, members of the Berkshire County
