Amy Kurzweil will present her graphic memoir, "Flying Couch," at The Bookstore, 11 Housatonic St. "Flying Couch," Kurzweil’s debut, tells the stories of three unforgettable women. Amy weaves her own coming-of-age as a young Jewish artist into the narrative of her mother, a psychologist, and Bubbe, her grandmother, a World War II survivor who escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto by disguising herself as a gentile.

The Friends of Adams Free Library, 92 Park St., will hold the annual sale of nearly new, used and donated adult and children’s books, paperbacks, magazines and other items from Aug. 22-24.  The sale will be held in the lower Miller Annex. Also on sale that week will be freshly baked items and raffle tickets for gift baskets.

For a donation of $5, book dealers and members of the public can gain early admission from 9 a.m.-noon on Friday, August 25. “First look” admission numbers will be available beginning at 8 am. The sale continues with free admission from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Visitors to the event are asked to bring their own bags and boxes.

GILDED AGE BOOK CLUB
Williamstown, 7 p.m.
In celebration of the summer exhibit "Orchestrating Elegance: Alma-Tadema and Design," the Clark Art Institute hosts a summer book club focusing on three novels set in or inspired by the Gilded Age in New York. The book club meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 7 pm in June, July, and August in the reading room, located in the Manton Research Center. Clark staff members facilitate discussion of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (June 28), Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad (July 26), and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (August 30), making connections to Orchestrating Elegance and artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s design of an elaborate, elegant music room for American industrialist Henry Gurdon Marquand.
