George C. Morrell, 92

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — George C. Morrell, 92, of 14 Thomson Place, Pittsfield, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at home. 



Born in Pittsfield on February 22, 1925, a son of the late Frank and Susan Polidoro Morrell, he attended Pittsfield Schools and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1943. George was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, mostly in Guam and was discharged as a Boatswain Mate 2nd Class. He was employed at the Crane & Co. Government Mill in Dalton for three years and then served with the Pittsfield Fire Dept. for five years and was last employed as a letter carrier for twenty-six years by the United States Postal Service working from the Pittsfield Post Office. 



George was a 60-year veteran entertainer and appeared on every local television and radio show, he was known as the “Bing” of the Berkshires with his theme song being “Welcome to My World.” He believed that anyone blessed with talent should use it, as he did. His band played in almost every local club and he had the privilege of singing for President John F. Kennedy as well as at many nursing homes around the Berkshires and Vermont. He belonged to the Musicians Union for 60 years and was a Deputy Sheriff for 50 years. George was an All Star catcher for the Tyler Aces for many years and was a fan of wrestling and the Yankees and was able to get a picture of Derek Jeter with his granddaughter, Janine.



His wife, the former Marjorie M. Vincent, died on December 23, 1991; they were married on November 7, 1953. 



Survivors include his son, George J. Morrell, a Deacon at St Agnes Church, and his wife Mary Anne of Dalton; his daughter, Melissa M. Morrell of Pittsfield, with whom he made his home; three grandchildren, Janine Mae Abdallah, Molly Cullen and her husband Shane, and Christopher Morrell and his wife Malaica; and six great-grandchildren, Amiah Renderer, Sadie, Portia and Shane Cullen, and London and Luciano Morrell. 



He was predeceased by three brothers, Donald, Anthony and Patrick Morell; and by two sisters, Anna Lesky and Carmella Taikowski.



Funeral notice: Services for George C. Morrell were private and burial followed in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the Flynn & Dagnoli-Bencivenga Funeral Home, 5 Elm Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
