Charlotte E. Melle, 96

August 30, 2017


PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Charlotte Elizabeth Melle, 96, formerly of Gale Avenue, Pittsfield, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Springside Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center.



Born in Rensselaer, New York, on July 24, 1921, the daughter of Thomas I. and Mary A. Carrier English, she came to Pittsfield at age 4, and was a 1940 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mrs. Melle was employed by General Electric Company where she was a dispatcher. She retired on December 31, 1984, with 44 years service.



She was a member of the G.E. Quarter Century and Pensioners clubs, a life member of IUE-AFLCIO 254, and a past director of the General Electric Athletic Association.



Mrs. Melle was a communicant of the former Notre Dame Church, was an associate member of the Holy Family League, a member of the Fathers Irish Club, an Officer of ITAM Lodge 564, and a member of the Dalton Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.



Charlotte was enthusiastic about exercise and had been a member of the YMCA Senior Fitness Group, the Hour Glass Fitness Center, and Berkshire Nautilus.



Her husband, Charles J. Melle, whom she married January 18, 1945, died September 10, 1988.



Mrs. Melle is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Earl R. English, Thomas W. English and her twin, Donald T. English; and her two sisters, Esther A. Kennedy and Mary A. Rupprecht. 



Funeral notice: Funeral services for Charlotte Elizabeth Melle will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 11 a.m., at Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. David E. Aufiero, Administrator of St. Mark Church, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.



Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society or to the Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter both in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
