WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars on Friday won the District 1 Championship by winning a game that began on Monday night.

Joe Woronick laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to drive in the winning run in bottom of the ninth to give Pittsfield an 8-7 win over Westfield.

The game began on Monday at Pittsfield's Deming Park and was ended in the bottom of the seventh when a Westfield player was ejected and the visitors did not have an eligible substitute left on their bench.

At the time, the umpires consulted with an umpiring supervisor by cell phone to get a ruling on whether Westfield - which led 7-5 - could continue the game.

The ruling at the field was that Pittsfield won by forfeit. But later Monday night, that decision was reversed.

Since the teams' best-of-three District playoff was scheduled to go back to Westfield for an "if necessary" game on Friday, it was decided to pick up the suspended game in Westfield.

Pittsfield, which started Friday with one out and a runner on first, completed the rally to tie the game and force extra innings, where Woronick played the hero.

"Unbelievable win," Pittsfield coach Eric Stone said Friday night.

The District 1 title decided, the teams stuck around to play an exhibition game, Stone said. Each side threw seven pitchers in the now unnecessary Game 3.

Both Pittsfield and Westfield advance to next week's Western Mass State Tournament, the former with the No. 1 seed.
