PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires, Inc. will host the 45th annual Gib Kittredge Hockey Tournament Friday through Monday, Jan. 15-18, at the club’s rink on 16 Melville St.

The first puck drops Friday night at 5 p.m. when the host Berkshire Bruins take on Bethlehem, N.Y., in the Squirt Division. Games continue Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The finals begin Monday at 9 a.m. The tournament also utilizes Williams College's Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown during the weekend. Admission is free.

“We are proud to again host the Kittredge Tournament," Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Chris Jacoby said. "It’s a great weekend of hockey competition and fun for the entire family, another example of the Club fulfilling its mission of offering programs that involve the community and advocate for youth. We invite everyone to attend the games and support this wonderful event.”

The Kittredge Tournament is one of the oldest and longest running youth hockey tournaments in the Northeast. This year, 14 teams from New England and New York, including three teams from the Boys’& Girls’ Club, will compete in three divisions (Squirts, Pee Wees, and Bantams). The tournament runs on a point basis determined by wins, losses and ties; each team is guaranteed three games.

The Tournament is named after Gilbert D. (“Gib”) Kittredge of Dalton, former general superintendent of Crane and Company, who also served as Director for the Pittsfield Boys Club (now the Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires). As a member of the club’s building committee, Kittredge played a key role in the construction of the hockey rink. The former Yale hockey player served as the first chairman of the hockey committee, and developed the youth hockey program that became his special project. Gib Kittredge died in October, 1970 at 45.
