Rabbi Josh Breindel of Temple Anshe Amunim and Pastor Sheila Sholes-Ross of First Baptist Church will hold an innovative service in commemoration of Martin Luther King Day. A light dessert reception will follow. The service, which has become an annual event, will reflect the joint themes of social action and awareness, and will include inspirational readings as well as music by the Temple and Church choirs.

The Metropolitan Opera presents a live simulcast of Bizet's opera of lust and longing set in the Far East, returning to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien. Berkshire Community College's Diversity Committee and Service-Learning Program is partnering with local organizations and Pittsfield Community Connection for the National Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Thirty BCC students and employees are expected to participate. A limited number of slots for volunteers from outside BCC are available. Registration is required. Volunteers will meet at the First United Methodist Church, and will then disperse to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Gladys Allen Brigham Center, or The Harvest Table.

This month Mark Shepard discusses restoration agriculture. Using nature as a model, restoration agriculture is the intentional restoration of healthy, functional ecosystems as the context for economically viable farm operations. Perennial crops, livestock, fungus, and pollinators are integrated to produce abundant food, fiber, and fuel crops while simultaneously restoring critical ecosystem services. 
 
The screening will be followed by a discussion with certified permaculture designer Matt Lamb, and Jay Allard.
