The 15th annual benefit for Hillcrest Educational Centers celebrates Robert "Bees" Prendergast, a founding board member and a generous man who was a strong advocate of children and education. In the spirit of Bees, and to honor those who today encapsulate these same traits, we carry on his love of hosting Irish celebrations. This year's Irish Person of the Year is Senator Stanley C. Rosenberg, President of the Massachusetts State Senate.

Enjoy an evening of song and storytelling with one of Berkshire County's most popular singer-songwriters. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the George B. Crane Memorial Center, whose mission is to provide a community-based center of support for sober alcoholics and recovering addicts. It offers a space for community service groups to hold meetings, programs, and social functions in a safe, substance-free environment.

The opening Poetry Slam of the 2016 series will be hosted by Melissa Quirk Cairns, and feature Providence-based writer and farmer Laura Brown-Lavoie. Poetry slams are lively spoken word competitions, judged by audience volunteers, in which poets have 3 minutes - without music or props - to work their magic. From a pile of scraps of t-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts and the like, pull, stretch, knot and weave a potholder rug to take home. Learn the ins and outs of this simple and creative use of completely recycled materials. Students will finish a runner rug measuring 2.5'x7' to take home. We supply the frame loom, and a nice big pile of used clothing. If you have a specific color palette in mind, make sure to bring along some items to complete your vision. No experience necessary.

The 6th annual Berkshire Festival of Women Writers will hold its closing weekend events at Hotel On North. Attend one or all sessions.
 
Saturday begins at 11am with "Living the Food Life: One woman's journey from cook to critic to novelist - and back," a brunch talk with author Ruth Reichl. Starting at 1:30pm, attend a moderated discussion, "Finding Our Voices, Telling Our Stories," with Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Veronica Chambers, and Anastasia Stanmeyer. The day concludes with "Women Writers of a Certain Age," a reading with Sonia Pilcer, Helen Epstein, Barbara Slate, and Karen Schoemer at 3pm.
 
Sunday's schedule includes "Preparing for Print: Pathways to Publication," a panel discussion with Jessica Hazelton, Jana Laiz, Marilyn Oser, and Carol Ascher at 1:30pm; followed by "Alison Larkin Presents... A Festive Tea Party with The English American" at 3pm. Take tea with the comedienne in a Festival finale that will leave you laughing and wishing for more!

Topics include how to eat better, move more, cultivate a sense of purpose, set reachable goals, and how to reduce stress.
