August 5 - August 11, 2016
FRIDAY-SUNDAY Berkshires Jazz Weekend

The first weekend in August will be an extraordinary one for jazz lovers in the Berkshires. Three different organizations will be presenting performing and visual art in three different settings.

On Friday, August 5, a jazz art show will open at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, combining the watercolors of Marguerite Bride and the photography of Lee Everett. Their exhibit, "Jazz Visions" opens with a reception during  First Fridays Artswalk from 5-8 p.m. The Artswalk will feature more than 15 art shows exhibiting work by over two dozen artists. Berkshire Organization for Original Music (BOOM) will also present three concerts: The Matchstick Architects at Downtown Pittsfield, Inc., The Tuesday Trio Plus Two at Crawford Square & James O'Neill at The Crowne Plaza!

On Saturday, Berkshires Jazz, Inc. presents Samirah Evans and her Handsome Devils at Zucchini's Restaurant. A rising jazz and blues singer out of New Orleans, Evans will have just performed at the Springfield festival that afternoon. The 8 p.m. show will be preceded by a full Italian buffet, starting at 7 p.m.

Sunday features a double-header, with a book talk and signing, pluse live music at the Whitney Center for the Arts. "Jazz in the Key of Light" is a career compendium by Ken Franckling. In addition to visually capturing a variety of the world's jazz greats in performance or moments of personal reflection, the award-winning photojournalist has paired the images with quotes from interviews he conducted over his career. Ken will discuss his career in a Q & A session beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a performance by Andy Kelly's Gypsy Jazz group.

The Man Who Knew Infinity
at The Little Cinema

In the 1910s, Srinivasa Ramanujan is a man of boundless intelligence that even the abject poverty of his home in Madras, India cannot crush. Eventually, his intelligence in mathematics and his boundless confidence attract the attention of the noted British mathematics professor, G.H. Hardy, who invites him to further develop his computations at Trinity College at Cambridge. Forced to leave his young wife behind, Ramanujan finds himself in a land where both his largely intuitive mathematical theories and his cultural values run headlong into both the stringent academic requirements of his school and mentor and the prejudiced realities of a Britain heading into WWI. Facing this with a family back home determined to keep him from his wife and his own declining health, Ramanujan joins with Hardy in a mutual struggle that would define Ramanujan as a barrier-breaker and one of India's greatest modern scholars.
