WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College art professor Guy Hedreen's book on the persona of the artist in ancient Greek art and literature is among several titles on the prestigious 2016 Choice list for Outstanding Academic Titles.

Choice is a publication of the Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association.

Hedreen's book, "The Image of the Artist in Archaic and Classical Greece" (Cambridge University Press, 2016), uses lyric poetry and pictorial art to explore the emergence of artistic subjectivity in early Greek culture.

Every year in the January issue, Choice publishes a list of Outstanding Academic Titles that were reviewed during the previous calendar year. Only ten percent of approximately 7,000 eligible reviewed titles are awarded. Overall excellence in presentation and scholarship, importance relative to other literature in the field, distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form, originality or uniqueness of treatment, value to undergraduate students, and importance in building undergraduate library collections are just some of the criteria applied while awarding the Outstanding Academic Titles.

Hedreen has been at Williams since 1990. He has a bachelor's degree from Pomona College, and a master's and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College. He has published extensively on ancient Greek art.
