PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Monday wasn't just opening day for the Red Sox season, it was also opening day for election season.

This fall, voters will be choosing a new City Council and School Committee. Nomination papers became available on Monday and there was a flurry of activity in the city clerk's office. A total of 14 potential candidates took out nomination papers for the City Council and two incumbent School Committee members took out papers.

For the four at-large seats, Edward Carmel, Craig Gaetani and Ty Allan Jackson, and incumbents Melissa Mazzeo and Peter White took out papers. Council President Peter Marchetti posted on his Facebook page that he would be taking out papers to run for re-election. Incumbent Kathleen Amuso has said she did not plan to run for re-election for an at-large seat.

For Ward 1, Helen Moon and Michael Cirullo both pulled papers. Gabriel Ecklund's address is listed in Ward 1 but he had pulled papers for Ward 7, for which he is ineligible. Once the residential confusion is sorted, he would likely join the slate of possible candidates for Ward 1. Incumbent Ward 1 Councilor Lisa Tully is not seeking re-election.

In Ward 2, incumbent Kevin Morandi took out nomination papers and he is being challenged by Dina Guiel.

In Ward 4, incumbent Christopher Connell took out papers as did William Wright.

In Ward 5, only Billy Keane took out papers. The seat is currently held by Donna Todd Rivers.

In Ward 6, Council Vice President John Krol took out nomination papers for re-election. Gaetani took out papers for that seat as well.

For the School Committee, Joshua Cutler and Daniel Elias, both incumbents, took out papers.

In order to get on the ballot, candidates must have 150 signatures for an at-large seat or a seat on the School Committee and 50 for a ward seat. Nomination papers must be submitted by July 24. The city election is on Nov. 7.
