Paper trail: Greylock Federal Credit Union held its ninth annual Community Shred Day on Saturday, May 6, shredding more than 7 tons of paper. The effort also raised $1,184 in donations for the Berkshire United Way. The credit union suggested a $1 donation per box from people looking to dispose of personal documents.
ProShred supplied two mobile shredding trucks for the event to provide proper disposal of private documents. People were able to witness the shredding process via a closed circuit monitor mounted on the truck. Millions of Americans have their identities stolen each year. Identity theft occurs when someone uses personally identifying information, like name, social security number, or credit card number, without permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. Shredding personal documents is one of the best ways to combat ID Fraud.
Write it up: Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation invites regional nonprofit staff to attend "An Afternoon with Tom Ahern," a two-part workshop, on Thursday, June 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Jane Iredale Cosmetics, 50 Church St., Great Barrington. Back by popular demand, Tom Ahern will present two back-to-back workshops: "The Big (little) Diff: Writing for Online Readers," a discussion of best practices in writing for web, email and social media platforms; and "Writing a Powerful Case for Support," which will review effective fundraising methods.
The New York Times calls Ahern "one of the country's most sought-after creators of fundraising messages." This event is part of Berkshire Taconic’s popular annual "Seminars in Nonprofit Excellence" series. Tickets are $40 per person; light food and beverages will be provided. Registration is now open online.
Looking ahead: The Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA), the professional association of CPAs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, previewed what an accounting career future would look like for students from Lenox High School at its "Is Accounting for Me?" conference at UMass Amherst. Seven Lenox High School students participated. The conference included interactive accounting exercises and workshops, discussions about accounting careers and CPA services, information about college programs and student life, and a networking lunch with college students, faculty and CPA practitioners.
Students got the chance to hear from professional CPAs about their jobs and to talk to college accounting students about their coursework and experience. Students also took part in an accounting based jeopardy competition. UMass Amherst Professor Cathy Lowry led a breakout session specifically for community college students looking to make the transition into a four-year school. Students were informed on what they need to focus on while in community college and how to successfully transfer into a four-year program
Teachers selected the students in attendance based on their aptitude for accounting. The following students from Lenox High School attended the event: Jaimie Henderson, senior; Piero Merino, sophomore; Hailey Patel, sophomore; Meet Patel, sophomore; Liam Lindsay, senior; Gabrielle Salinetti, senior; and Mauren Gaherty, senior.
Earnings report: Berkshire Hills Bancorp reported first quarter 2017 earnings of $15.5 million, or 44 cents per share. Core earnings totaled $19.4 million, or $0.55 per share. Net income increased by 50 percent over the prior quarter and core earnings increased by 8 percent, including the first full quarter benefit of the acquired First Choice operations. Non-core after-tax merger charges totaled $0.12 per share for the quarter.
