PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Sheri L. Quinn and Anthony C. Mazzeo are the 40th recipients of the Rotary Club of Pittsfield's prestigious Dr. David B. Kagan Award.

This award was established in 1977 in memory of Dr. David B. Kagan, a long-time Pittsfield Rotarian and community citizen. The award has been given annually to one female and one male from Central Berkshire each year who have made significant contributions to their community through volunteer activities. The nominees are not necessarily high-profile individuals, but persons who have provided service above self to others. The recipients represent the highest standards of the Judeo-Christian ethic, which is the basis of the award.

Quinn was born and raised in Berkshire County, where her family ties and responsibilities kept her close to home. She is a CPA and a partner in the firm of Fenton Quinn, PC, in Pittsfield. She started as an intern at the firm in 1983 and became a partner in 1994, having obtained degrees in accounting from Berkshire Community College and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.  At the same time she became a partner in the CPA firm, she began as a board member at the Berkshire County Kids Place and Violence Prevention Center. She served as treasurer most of those years and remains very active on the board to this day.  She also serves on the board of the Coolidge Hill Foundation, making grants to organizations that serve primarily children and the disabled.  She serves on the board of Feronia Forward, whose mission is to provide a year-round venue for children to learn the importance of sustainable forestry. In addition to these three boards, she also serves as one of two representatives from the Kids Place board on the Hillcrest Foundation Board, ensuring the Kids Place a voice at the table for ongoing communication and support.

Quinn and her husband of 24 years, Matt, reside in New Ashford. They have two grown daughters and a new grandson.

Mazzeo was born and raised in Pittsfield. He manages his time between the very successful family owned businesses of Mazzeo's Ristorante, Catering & Home Made Pasta and Mazcot's Sports Bar And Grill. He is an active member of UNICO of Pittsfield, a 25-year-old Italian heritage organization that provides assistance to the those in need and grants educational scholarships to local high school seniors and continuing education students. The Berkshire County Jimmy Fund also benefits from his volunteer efforts, where they raise funds to support cancer research and clinical trials at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He is on the board of Berkshire County ARC and the Boys & Girls Club of the Berkshires, where he also serves on the golf committee. In addition, he sponsors both a Little League team and a softball team for the youth of the community. He also donates or volunteers for a myriad of organizations too many to mention on a yearly basis. Mazzeo was instrumental in the launching of the Rotary Club of Pittsfield Foundation Wine Pairing Fundraiser, which started four years ago and has helped to raise funds for capital improvement projects here in Pittsfield for nonprofits in need of renovations.

Mazzeo lives in Pittsfield with his wife of 20 years, Melissa, and their two daughters.

The recipients are chosen by the Kagan Award Committee co-chairs, Edward Forfa and Kelly Marion. A $200 stipend to the charity of the recipient's choice and a plaque are awarded.
