PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Miss Hall's School seniors Lin Hou, of Shenzhen, China, and Elizabeth Tagliaferro of Pittsfield have been named Commended Students in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The designation means that Hou and Tagliaferro placed among the top 5 percent of the approximately 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarships, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program.

The designation recognizes the students’ academic promise and their exceptional performance on the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or PSAT/NMSQT.

In addition to their academic achievements, both Hou and Tagliaferro are active members of the MHS community.

Tagliaferro, the daughter of Dean and Martha Tagliaferro, is an admission ambassador, Gold Team Captain for the Miss Hall’s School Athletic Association, and a captain of the varsity soccer team.

Hou, the daughter of Jinlong Hou and Zheng Qin, is an admission ambassador, proctor, and president of the school's International Student Alliance. She is a leader of the school's cooking and science clubs, is a science and math peer tutor, and is a member of the Science Bowl team.
