PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Williams men’s crew took to its home course of Onota Lake in Pittsfield Saturday to line up against Wesleyan and Amherst in the annual Little Three Championships.

This is the first time in many years that Amherst has returned to the regatta. The conditions were blustery with a moderate cross wind, but relatively tame compared to practice conditions on Onota for the past several days for Williams.

The first varsity opened up the action for the day, looking to bring the Saratoga Oar trophy back to the Purple Valley. The Ephs had a solid start, keeping even with Wesleyan, and pulling away from Amherst, through the high strokes and first 500 meters. Through the middle 1,000 of the race Williams made its move on the Cardinals and began steadily pulling away. Coming into the final 500 meters, the Ephs had a length lead which they maintained to finish up on Wesleyan by three seconds. The final times were Williams 6 minutes, 16 seconds, Wesleyan 6:19, Amherst 6:48.

In the 2V, Williams had some bobbles off the start but were able to come through the 500 meter mark dead even with Wesleyan and ahead of Amherst. The Ephs showed signs of walking up on their opponents during their 500 meter move, but failed to capitalize. Through the second 500 Williams suffered some off strokes and lost ground to the Cardinals, coming through the middle of the race several seats down. For the second half the Ephs found a solid rhythm and were more consistent than the first half, but they were never able to make a decisive move to pull back over Wesleyan. The final times were Wesleyan 6:29, Williams 6:32, Amherst 7:08.

In the 3V, Williams had their best start of the year. Once again the Ephs and Cardinals pulled away from Amherst, and traded leads in a tightly contested race through the first 1000 meters. In the third 500 things began to fall apart for Williams, as they were unable to execute their decisive move. The Ephs fell behind and lost to Wesleyan by a margin of 3 seconds. The final times were Wesleyan 6:51, Williams 6:54, Amherst 7:40.

The Ephs will be back in action next weekend when they take on Bates, Holy Cross, Saint Joe's, and Tufts on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester.

Women’s Crew
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Williams women got to race on their home course in the 50th annual Little Three Regatta this Saturday. For the first time in recent history, Amherst participated in the event, fielding two eights. Wesleyan raced three women's eights, and the Williams women had four full eights. It was a balmy 43 degrees at race time, and a steady wind picked up over the course of the day. Having practiced in gusts, white-capped waves, and snow all week, the Eph women expected nothing less.

The 1V was the first boat on the course. Coxswain Louisa Abel, stroke seat Caroline Kessler, Eileen Russell, Diana Matthiesen, Maddy Boutet, Sam Lazar, Katrina Wheelan, and captains Clara Beery and Bertie Miller took on Wesleyan and Amherst.  The women finished in second place with a time of 6:54.84; they were just one second behind Wesleyan.

The 2V, composed of coxswain Ava Palmo, stroke seat Fiona Yonkman, Kate Latimore, Annie Rush, Julia Mini, Katherine Melkonian, Stephanie Brown, Masa Peterson, and Brynn Moynihan, set out to turn things in their favor. They finished in first place, with a time of 7:11.11, ten seconds ahead of Wesleyan.

All boats will now focus on preparing for the New England Rowing Championships on May 5 in Worcester.

Women’s Tennis
BRUNSWICK, Maine – Williams advanced to 14-0 on the year and 5-0 in conference with a victory over Bowdoin on Saturday, one of two away matches

Senior duo Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio paired up for an 8-3 victory over Tess Trinka, the only senior on the Bowdoin team, and Izzy Essi, one of three first-years. Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio partnered with Korina Neveux o battle first-years Rachel Bercovitch and Viv Daniel to an 8-5 victory while Mia Gancayco and Chloe Henderson swept their opponents, 8-0.

Play then shifted to singles matches with the Ephs needing just two victories to clinch the victory. Henderson, Gancayco, Cancio, and Neveux all earned their second wins of the day in straight sets. McDonnel Nieto del Rio battled through a tie-break set after losing her second for a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 win.

Men’s Tennis
BRUNSWICK, Maine – On Saturday, the No. 4 Williams Ephs (11-2) played arguably its toughest match yet when it visited Bowdoin to face the No. 2 Polar Bears (13-1). The Ephs had won seven straight entering the weekend, but Bowdoin came out on top Saturday, 5-4.

In hindsight, the doubles portion of the match was the difference maker in the final score. The Polar Bears took two of three points, and nearly got a third. However, Jordan Sadowsky and Arturo Kam won 9-7 to save the match from getting out of hand.

In singles, the teams were in a dead heat. Each team had two victories that were won in two sets, and one that had to go into a third. Arturo Kam was able to tie the match with a 6-2 win in his third set, setting up for a great finish. In the final match, Austin Barr faced off against All-American senior Luke Tercek in No. 2 singles. Barr won the first set 6-3 but lost the second 2-6 after Tercek made a strong comeback. Both players clearly wanted to win the match for their teams, and the scoreline shows how even they were. They had to go into a tiebreak to decide the win, and unfortunately for the Ephs, the veteran Tercek came out on top

Men’s Golf
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- After a week full of snow in the Northeast, eight teams from the New England Small College Athletic Conference teed it up at Taconic Golf Club for the first round of the 2018 NESCAC Spring Opener, hosted by Williams College.

The par-71 track was looking the best it has all season in the bright sunshine and 50-degree weather, though its teeth were still bared in the form of tricky greens and gusting winds. Any score in the 70s was a good round considering the conditions.

Trinity College shot out into the lead on day one, firing a team score of 302. Williams and Middlebury are both five back at 307, and Hamilton College will round out the lead foursome tomorrow after finishing with a team score of 312.

Williams College got a much needed boost from their sophomore Will Kannegieser, who methodically worked his way around the course in 70 shots, good enough for a two shot overnight lead. Trinity's Nate Choukas is next at 72, followed by Middlebury's Jeff Giguere at 74 and Hamilton's Bobby Osborn at 75. Behind the top four is a pack of players at 76, including Will Rosenfield and Jack Junge from Trinity, Jordan Bessalel from Middlebury, and Joe Tigani from Hamilton.

Women’s Golf
AMHERST, Mass.—After a week of practice in the slurries, it was nice to play the Jack Leaman Invitational under the sun. This invitational is usually played at the Hickory Ridge Golf Club but due to wet conditions, Saturday’s round was moved to the nine-hole, Amherst Golf Club. The Williams team sits in third place with a team total of 323, behind NYU at 320 and the host team at 316.

The women's team played steady golf but no one member had a monumental round. Instead, a lot of bogeys and not enough birdies were made. Many of the players struggled on the greens today with only six players out of 50 player field in the seventies. The Williams women grinded hard but nothing dropped for them.

The squad was led by senior Phoebe Matttana and junior Cordelia Chan who shot a pair of 80s. Senior Liz Gudas was one worse at 81 and freshman Holly Davenport was another one back with an 82. Junior Isabella Wang finished off the scoring with an 84. Sophomore Renee Kwak, playing as an individual shot an 88.

The second round is Sunday at Hickory Ridge.

Baseball
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- David Kwan went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead Williams to a 2-1 win and a double-header split against Hamilton on Saturday.

Jack Bohen went the distance in the win, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits over nine innings.

Softball
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- A little deja vu for the Williams College softball team Saturday.

After dispatching Middlebury 9-0 in game one of a doubleheader, sophomore Rebecca Duncan capped a late rally with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap to give the Ephs a 3-2 victory and a sweep of the three-game series played at Cole Field.

Senior Lexi Curt continued her assault on the Williams record book, hitting her 11th home run of the season in the opener, a new single-season mark.

The wins improved Williams to 26-6 overall and completed its record for the 2018 season in the NESCAC West Division at 9-3. The Ephs are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Skidmore beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Middlebury fell to 13-11 with the two losses. The Panthers face Hamilton Sunday at 12 p.m. in a game to be played at Cole Field on the campus of Williams College.

Men’s Lacrosse
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Kevin Stump scored six goals as Williams won its fourth straight, 11-8 at Bowdoin.

George Peele made 12 saves for the Ephs (8-6, 6-3), who finish the regular season at Middlebury on Wednesday.

Women’s Lacrosse
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Bowdoin used a 4-0 run in the second half to take a 9-8 lead and scored with just under two minutes left to earn a 10-9 win over Williams.

Kara Wollmers and Sophia Millay each scored twice for the Ephs (6-8, 2-7).

Kamie Cisneros and Ana Alvarenga combined for nine saves for Williams, which goes to Middlebury on Wednesday.
