Biz Briefs: Tunnel City Hosts Art Show Through End of June
11:34AM / Monday, June 18, 2018
Print | Email

Seline Skoug, left, displays her photographs taken around the world and in her own home of Vermont at Tunnel City Coffee through June, along with the paintings of Marilyn Cavallari, right.

Coffee and culture

New art can be found this spring at Tunnel City Coffee's flagship shop on Spring Street in Williamstown, with work by Vermont photographer Seline Skoug and landscape paintings by Marilyn Cavallari. The show runs until the end of June 2018 and combines bright, surreal paintings with color-rich rural photography.

Diversity in style is the goal for Tunnel City Coffee's art shows, which aim to give skilled local artists the chance to display their work in alternative venues where people gather every day. This season's show reflects on different ways of looking at the environments in which we find ourselves every day, as interpreted by Skoug's evocative photography and Cavallari’s surreal landscapes that play with memories of familiar scenes.

Greylock scholarships

Greylock Federal Credit Union has given awards to local college-bound high school students who each received $500 from the credit union's annual "Community Enrichment" scholarship program. The scholarships were presented to community-minded senior class members from 11 Berkshire County high schools.

This year’s recipients are: Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School, Jordan LeSage and Timothy Durocher; Drury High School, Cassandra Crosier; Mount Everett High School, Marya Makuc; Mount Greylock Regional High School, Cole Seaman and Jacob Hane; Hoosac Valley High School, Jenna Charron and Skylar Case; Lee High School, Hunter Roosa and Michael Comalli; McCann Technical School, Hannah Fuller and Paige Shepard; Monument Mountain Regional High School, Hannah Flynn; Pittsfield High School, Danielle LaBlanc and Makailey Cookis; Taconic High School, Shannon Netzer and Tyler Williamson; and Wahconah Regional High School, Emily West and Patrick Butler.

Applicants were judged on community involvement and an essay that asked them to answer the question: "How would you use your education and your position to better your community?" The students wrote about how they would use their chosen field of interest to make the Berkshires the perfect place to work, play, and live. The scholarships are to be applied toward tuition at state-accredited or nationally-accredited two or four-year colleges or universities.

Porch performances

For more than 200 years, the Red Lion Inn’s iconic front porch has welcomed guests to sit, sip and gather. This summer, it will serve as a cultural hub with pop-up performances and libations by Red Lion Inn Sommeliers, Dan Thomas and Tim Eustis. Open to the public, guests and visitors can immerse themselves in porch life with a variety of performances from local musical and theatrical organizations and drinks perfectly paired for the season.

Partnering with cultural attractions like Berkshire Theatre Group, Jacob's Pillow, Shakespeare and Co., Tanglewood Music Center, Norman Rockwell Museum and Hancock Shaker Village, the region's summer entertainment comes to life on Stockbridge’s Main Street. Each pop-up performance will last roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Visit the website for the full schedule of performances and events.

In addition, the celebration of summer continues with several pop-up bars throughout the summer inviting guests to enjoy a complimentary tasting of wines and craft spirits. Each with a different focus, the pop-up bars will take place on the front porch on various dates from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Also new this summer, the inn will offer guests a round-trip shuttle to Tanglewood. For more information and to make advance shuttle reservations/payment, please visit the website or call 413-298-5545. Shuttle service is subject to availability.

Boot camp

Susan Nicholl

The Nonprofit Center of the Berkshires is holding a one-day Summer Boot Camp on Wednesday, July 11, for new, young and small nonprofits in need of a tune-up. The Nonprofit Boot Camp takes place at the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge and covers the basics of nonprofit management, including governance, finance, fundraising, legal, and best practices. Lead presenter Susan Nicholl addresses topics through a combination of facilitator-led instruction, interactive discussion, local experts and panel discussion with area practitioners. Boot Camp attendance is $125 for the primary participant and $50 for each additional participant from a nonprofit organization.  For more information or to register, visit the website.

Aimed at directors, board members, and volunteer leaders who want to build a solid foundation or address gaps, this day-long session presents an opportunity for staff and board to attend together. Attendees will leave with a 100-page handbook containing templates, sample descriptions, articles, and other resources to guide them in the coming months. Attending organizations will also have a free hour of phone consultation with the Boot Camp presenter, good anytime in 2018, to help their organization past any hurdles.

Nicholl has served as a management consultant for the Institute for Nonprofit Development in Central Massachusetts and was instrumental in launching and establishing the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network as its first and sole staff member. She has served as the past chair of the MetroWest Nonprofit Network and as a former editor of massnonprofit.org. She has worked professionally with boards of directors at more than three dozen organizations, providing consultation focused on re-energizing and growing small organizations, as principal of The Governance Group.
