AUGUSTA, Maine — The Pittsfield 15-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball All-Stars defeated North Providence-Smithfield, 4-2, on Saturday in the New England Regional tournament.
Pittsfield takes a 2-0 record into Sunday's pool play finale, when it takes on Maine state champion, Tri-County, also 2-0.
14-Year-Olds
NORWALK, Conn. — The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s left 11 men on base in a 6-4 loss to 2017 13-year-old champion Keene, N.H.
"We had our opportunities," Pittsfield coach Bryon Sherman said. We just couldn't get them in."
Sam Sherman had two hits for Pittsfield, which got a hit apiece from Steve Zuccolo, Nick Hall and Owen Krobath.
Michael Zwinglestein and Shane Bernardo each threw three innings on the mound.
Last year, Pittsfield took this same Keene squad to extra innings before losing, 1-0, in the regional.
On Sunday afternoon, Pittsfield takes on Tri-County, Maine, at 1 p.m., in the conclusion of pool play. The winner of that game moves on to Monday's elimination round.
13-Year-Olds
WEST FIELD, Mass. — Portland, Maine scored six runs in the sixth inning to break open a 0-0 game en route to an 8-1 win over the Pittsfield 13s on Saturday.
Chase Doyle singled to center in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Nate Murphy, who had reached on a walk.
On Sunday, Western Massachusetts champion Pittsfield (0-2) finishes pool play against Eastern Mass champion Milton.
