WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Purple Valley Aquatic's Cole Kuster of Williamstown returned to New England after competing at the 2018 Speedo Junior Nationals swim meet in Irvine, Calif.
Kuster, 17, qualified to swim not only the 1500 meter freestyle, but also the 400 freestyle and the 800 freestyle at the event. At the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center, he competed against some of the fastest swimmers in the country from July 31 to Aug. 4. This swim meet brings excitement, fast athletes and another great level of competition for Cole.
Kuster managed not to let the events, crowds or situations overwhelm him as he came away with some amazing swims. He rounded out the weekend with four of his five best times, which is a great accomplishment at a meet of this caliber.
Kuster placed 25th in the 1500 freestyle with a time of 16:02.8, which was his best time by 9 seconds. In the 400 freestyle, he placed 30th with a time of 4:01.68 (a best by 3 seconds), and in the 800 freestyle he placed 21st with a time of 8:23.53, which was right on his best time.
Kuster also swam time trial races in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, racing his way to best times of 55.2 in the 100 and 1:56.04 in the 200 freestyle.
He said he was extremely pleased with how he swam at the event, but he still is hungry for even more next time out. Kuster will now get some much deserved time off this month before returning to the pool on Sept. 10, when Purple Valley Aquatics begins its 2018-19 short course/fall season.
