Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13s Reach Regional Title Game; 15s Bow in Quarter-Finals

The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars Thursday will play for a New England title in Stamford, Conn.

ROCHESTER, N.H. -- Greater Portand, Maine, rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth, Wednesday to hand the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars a 7-6 defeat that ended Pittsfield's run in the New England Regional Championship.
 
Pittsfield had gone ahead, 6-4, with two runs in the top of the eighth when Matt Lee hit a sacrifice fly to score Nick Guanchione, and Chase Racine doubled to right to score Tyler Gaudette.
 
It was a back-and-forth game all night in the first round of the six-team bracket play at the regional.
 
Pittsfield battled back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth thanks to a Racine sac fly and a passed ball that allowed Lee to score from third.
 
The Maine State Champs came back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
 
Chase Doyle and Lee each doubled. Collin Merwin went 2-for-3 in a nine-hit Pittsfield attack.
 
Lee, Merwin and Adam Lazits split time on the mound, allowing just two earned runs. Pittsfield committed five errors in the loss.
 
Greater Portland advances to Thursday's regional semi-final against New Hampshire State Champion Nashua.
 
13-year-old Tournament
STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars Wednesday beat host Stamford, Conn., to advance to Thursday's regional championship game.
 
Pittsfield earned a bye through the first round of the six-team bracket play phase of the eight-team regional based on its 3-0 record in pool play.
 
On Thursday, Pittsfield will meet Keene, N.H., for a berth in the Babe Ruth World Series. Pittsfield beat Keene, 11-1, in pool play.
 
The Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series is scheduled for Aug. 8-15 in Westfield, Mass.
 
At the regional, Christian Salzarulo has a team-high six hits, and Nick Brindle has five hits in four games for Pittsfield.
 
Evan Blake has drawn six walks and scored six times. Nick Brindle and Blake are tied for the team lead with four RBIs apiece.
 
Salzarulo has won two games. Blake and Cam Sime each have a win, and Brayden Gutzmer has picked up two saves.
