Celebrate World Fish Migration Day at Berkshire Athenaeum

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Celebrate World Fish Migration Day at the Pittsfield Public Library on Saturday, May 21, from 10 AM to 12 PM.    Join Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT), Housatonic Valley Association, Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, and the City of Pittsfield for this free day that takes place every two years as a global celebration to create awareness about the importance of migratory fish and free-flowing rivers.   As part of this event, interactive displays for all ages will demonstrate some of the challenges migratory fish encounter—from physical barriers, such as dams and culverts, to runoff pollution that enters aquatic ecosystems. Berkshire Community College Participates in 'No Mow May'

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) is now taking part in an initiative called "No Mow May."    BCC has directed its facilities staff to refrain from mowing campus lawns until after June 1.    The "No Mow May" movement, which originated in the United Kingdom in 2019, now includes dozens of participant cities in the United States. The 'driver' of the crashed vehicle is taken away by police as motorists and school buses drive slowly by. Public safety personnel are hoping that it sends a message about bad decisions.  DALTON, Mass. — It was a tragic scene Thursday morning on Old Windsor Road.   A Honda sedan was head-on into a utility pole, its windshield smashed. Canna Provisions, Berkshire Humane Team Up for Rabies Clinic

PITTSFIELD, Mass. &mdash With a grant from Canna Provisions, Berkshire Humane Society is offering free rabies vaccines for cats on Tuesday, May 24 from 4:30 to 6 pm and for dogs on Wednesday, May 25 from 5 to 7 pm at the main shelter, 214 Barker Road.   On each day, microchips will be available at a discounted price of $10 each to celebrate National Chip Your Pet month.    Pittsfield residents with any current rabies certificate may also license their dogs on Wednesday: $10 for spayed or neutered dogs and $20 for intact dogs. Pittsfield Annual Fishing Derby Being Held at Wild Acres

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Conservation Commission, in collaboration with Lyon Aviation, will sponsor a free fishing derby for youth 14 and under Saturday, May 21, at the Wild Acres Conservation Area.   The event is rain or shine.   The derby will be held 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.    The accessible trail down to the pond is open. Pittsfield Council Begins Review of Fiscal 2023 Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council on Tuesday spent four hours beginning its review of the city's $172 million budget, preliminarily passing nine departments' spending plans as proposed.

At-Large Councilor Karen Kalinowsky, Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren, and Ward 2 Councilor Charles Kronick unsuccessfully motioned to make amendments to different departments.

Kronick even delved into his personal views of gender identity when discussing the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, later adding that city government is not responsible for others' feelings.
