Barrington Stage Company Celebrates 10th Anniversary

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Barrington Stage Company (BSC) celebrates its 10th anniversary and re-opening of the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center with Broadway's Joshua Henry in an encore concert, "Joshua Henry Up Close," on Sunday, May 29 at 8:00 p.m.    Tickets are $60, by calling 413-236-8888 or online at barringtonstageco.org.   The concert will honor long-time supporters of Barrington Stage since its early years, Sydelle and Lee Blatt, who were instrumental in BSC's move from Sheffield to Pittsfield in 2005. Pittsfield Postpones School Intruder Drills After Texas Shooting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Superintendent Joseph Curtis postponed active intruder drills that were scheduled this week out of respect for those who were killed in a mass school shooting in Texas on Tuesday.   Nineteen children and two teachers lost their lives when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire on a fourth-grade classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.   An emotional School Committee on Wednesday called for gun control and mental health support.    "The amount of courage that it took for our teachers and our kids and our parents to come to school today is miraculous," said Mayor Linda Tyer.   Chair William Cameron opened the meeting with a moment

Pittsfield Council Mulls Mental-Health Responder Solutions

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mental health supports were a reoccurring topic at the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

The panel took up three new petitions that strive to answer the community's ask for improved responders for residents who are in crisis. The city's deficiency of mental health responders was brought to light after Miguel Estrella died at the hands of Pittsfield Police in late March.

During open microphone, residents also said the city's nearly $12 million police budget, which was passed last week, needs to reflect such efforts.

Hancock Shaker Village Contemporary Asian Art Exhibit

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — In its first major exhibition on contemporary Asian art, "A Spirit of Gift, A Place of Sharing" is a campus-wide exhibition opening May 30 at Hancock Shaker Village.    The exhibition features three artists—Yusuke Asai of Japan, Kimsooja of Korea, and Pinaree Sanpitak of Thailand – who explore links between 19th-century Shaker art and contemporary Asian art. New Look for 2022 at Lanesborough's Baker's Golf Center

Pittsfield Police Arrest Man In Possession of Gun and Drugs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police arrested 27-year-old Myles Handy near the Big Y Monday after they reportedly found a loaded, unlicensed gun on him.    On Monday, May 23 at approximately 3:30 PM, Officer Ansy Jumeau was patrolling the parking lot of the Big Y Supermarket located at 200 West St. There, he observed a man, later identified as 27-year-old Myles Handy, attempting to conceal an object in the front of his pants.    As he passed the officer, the officer observed the outline of a firearm handle from inside Handy's t-shirt.   Officer Jumeau attempted to catch up to Handy, who had started walking faster away from him and refused to stop, according to

Pittsfield Licensing Board OKs Liquor Licenses for Two New Eateries

The former Papa Gino's on Merrill Road closed after nearly a half-century in business. The location will reopen as a Mexican restaurant.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Two new restaurants are on the horizon for the city.

The Licensing Board on Monday approved the transfer of a seven-day all-alcohol license from Portsmitt's Lakeway Restaurant to Old Man Jeff's, which will be run by Jeffrey Yeager, the former assistant vice president of planning and reporting at Guardian Life Insurance Co.

The board also approved a seasonal all-alcohol restaurant license application for El Habanero Mexican Grill, which plans to open in the former Papa Gino's on Merrill Road.

Pittsfield Board Hesitant to Develop Short Term Rental Regulations

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Community Development Board wants to learn more about the impact of short-term rentals in the city before creating a regulation or governing ordinance for them.

In March, the Ordinances and Rules subcommittee referred a petition to the board that requested an investigation of claims concerning Airbnbs in the neighborhood of Ridge Avenue.

The council asked for a response by June with an expectation that they would give guidance on a process for short-term rentals yet the board is hesitant to take action without all of the information in front of them.
