Pittsfield School Committee OKs $72M Fiscal 2023 Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The School Committee on Wednesday adopted a $72 million operating budget for fiscal 2023. It will go to the City Council in early June for final approval.

The budget of $72,398,262 is a 7.56 percent, or $5,086,562, increase from this year. Most of the increase is in contractual obligations, which increased by about $4.7 million.

Superintendent Joseph Curtis said this includes resources to ultimately settle with the American Federation of Teachers.

Members of Local 1315 AFT, which includes bus drivers and attendants, cafeteria workers, custodians, paraprofessionals, and educational secretaries, have called for better compensation from the district.

Pittsfield Police Investigating Briarwood Lane Shooting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at approximately 5:00 PM, Pittsfield Police responded to the area of 3 Briarwood Lane for multiple reports of a shooting.    While enroute, patrol units were notified of a motor vehicle crash on Pecks Road that was related to the shooting incident.   Members of the Pittsfield Police Patrol Division, Detective Bureau, Crime Scene Unit, Narcotics Unit and Anti-Crime Unit responded to both scenes.    It was confirmed a shooting had taken place in the area of 3 Briarwood Lane and that the victim was in route to BMC in a private vehicle.   Responding units to the Pecks Road crash found the vehicle’s

U.S. Marshals Arrest Fourth Suspect in Delacruz-Batista Homicide

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A Pittsfield man wanted for murder was arrested in New York State by the U.S. Marshal's Service on Tuesday.    Anthony Robertson, 40, wanted in the killing of Reymon Delacruz-Batista in December, was arrested by U.S. Marshal's and Binghamton, N.Y., Police at an apartment in Binghamton.   The Berkshire District Attorney's Office began the rendition process and law enforcement will transport Robertson back to Berkshire County for arraignment at a future date.   Robertson faces charges of murder, kidnapping, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.   Hunters discovered Delacruz-Batista's body in the Pittsfield

Preliminary Estrella Shooting Report Says Officers Followed Guidelines

Pittsfield Residents Demand Change to Prevent Police Shootings

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Residents took to the open microphone portion of the City Council meeting to call for change following the shooting death by police of Miguel Estrella and the 2017 death of Daniel Gillis.

Estrella's death in late March has triggered a significant community response and the council has yet to respond to the situation, which was also brought up during public comment.

Berkshire Economic Recovery Program Announces Additional Offerings

Pittsfield Back in Red Zone for COVID-19

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A spike in COVID-19 cases has pushed the city back into the "red zone."

The city's positivity rate was at 5.9 on Sunday with an average case rate of 47.1 per 100,000. This is a stark contrast to the positivity rate of 2.1 in late March when there were only about 13 cases per 100,000 people.

Pittsfield entered the red incidence rate for transmission on Friday when the positivity rate rose to 5.3 percent. This risk category is defined by having equal to or more than 10 average cases per 100,000 and having a five percent or higher positivity rate in a 14-day period.

Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity Receive Commonwealth Corps Support

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) has selected 16 nonprofit agencies from across the state to host Commonwealth Corps members for the 2022-2023 program year.   Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity is one of the 16 nonprofits that will receive at least two full-time or half-time Commonwealth Corps members.   Established in 2007, the Commonwealth Corps is a state-funded service internship program that engages Massachusetts residents of all ages, backgrounds, and identities in direct service to strengthen communities, address critical needs, and increase volunteerism.    Commonwealth Corps members serve at their host site organization for 10 months
