Pittsfield Street Work Scheduled July 21-25

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — City Hall has released a list of street improvements that are scheduled to be undertaken from Monday, July 21, to Friday, July 25.   The Department of Public Works will making the following improvements: Crosswalk line painting will occur overnight hours this week in the downtown area and near schools. Complete the installation of aprons on Newell Street.   In addition, the state Department of Transportation will be conducting the following work: Pavement markings in preparation of line painting will occur on North Street, South Street and First Street.   Additional utility underground work, in the right of way, will be occurring on the

BRTA Conducting Customer Survey

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Regional Transit Authority is conducting a survey as part of our five-year Comprehensive Regional Transit Plan update.    We invite anyone or any agency to participate in this survey to provide feedback about the BRTA and transit in the Berkshires. There will be a pop-up event at the BRTA's Intermodal Transit Center lobby at 1 Columbus Ave. on Tuesday, July 22, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.   The survey can be found at www.berkshirerta.gov.

Berkshire Force 14s Win Showdown with Thunder at Dalton Tournament

DALTON, Mass. – Julia McComish went 2-for-3 with a triple at the plate and threw two scoreless innings in the circle on Saturday morning as the Berkshire Force 14-and-under travel softball team beat the Greylock Thunder, 6-2, in the 15th annual CRA Invitational at Pine Grove Park.   But the Force will have to beat the Thunder one more time on Sunday morning to get a crack at the title.   The South Troy Dodgers earned wins over Dalton and the Force on Saturday to capture the top seed in the four-team division.   The New Yorkers will square off against the hosts again on Sunday at Pine Grove Park in the semi-finals.   The Thunder and the Force, meanwhile, will meet

Post 68-2 Falls to Milford in Legion Playoffs

MILFORD, Mass. – Daniel Heisler struck out four and scattered six hits in a complete-game effort on the mound Saturday to lead the Milford Post 59 Seniors to a 5-1 win over Post 68-2 in the Massachusetts American Legion Baseball playoffs.   Gavin Maffuccio went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run on a Christian Aldrich RBI in the top of the first for Post 68-2.   Colby Robb took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs in six innings of work.   Post 68-2 Sunday plays Sheffield Post 340, a 9-2 loser at East Springfield.

Berkshire Flyer Passenger Service Suspended

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — WNYT Channel 13 in Albany, N.Y., is reporting that passenger train service to the city was suspended including the Berkshire Flyer.   An Amtrak advisory in late June first stated Train 1237, the Berkshire Flyer, would terminate at Albany and a bus would complete the transit to Pittsfield.    WNYT reported this week that service would be suspended until January because a hole developing under the tracks in Greenbush, N.Y., was creating a massive safety hazard.   According to Railway Supply, shifting soil was first noticed in May and worsened. Contractors are already making preparations for reconstruction of the area.

Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s Roll Over Maine

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Kevin Smith went 2-for-2 with a pair of triples and a pair of RBIs Saturday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars to a 17-3 win over Maine at the New England Regional.   Aiden Arseneau and Bryce Hoff each had a pair of hits, and Jace Coco doubled in a 10-hit Pittsfield attack.   Jonathan Parsons and Matt Keegan split time on the mound in the five-inning win.   Parsons started and struck out four while allowing one earned run in two innings of work. Keegan did not allow an earned run and struck out four.   Pittsfield improved to 2-0 in pool play, which it finishes on Sunday evening against Smithfield, R.I.

NAMI Berkshires Holds Youth Mental Wellness Fair

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — NAMI Berkshire County held its first ever Youth Mental Health Wellness Fair on July 12 at the Common, in conjunction with Roots Risings' Pittsfield Farmers Market.    The local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness attracted close to 250 people to the "big tent" to partake in painting activities including T-shirts under the guidance of local artist Mike Carty, birdhouses, wellness rocks and flowerpots, and planted flowers in pots and made friendship bracelets.   Several non-profit organizations also participated in the event, sharing information on

Wahconah Park Grandstand Staged for Demolition

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After a quarter century of hosting baseball fans, demolition is planned for the Wahconah Park grandstand to make way for the ballpark's future. 

On Tuesday, the Parks Commission voted to demolish the historic, disrepaired grandstand and have the project team consider how to retain the electrical elements so that baseball can continue to be played. 

Commissioner Anthony DeMartino successfully motioned to "approve the process of removing the grandstand so we can have the project move forward and with the recommendation of the [owner's project manager] and the contractors about what we need to put in place to allow baseball to happen

Governor Names New Massachusetts Environmental Police Colonel

Dalton Wants Berkshire Concrete's Unauthorized Dig Site Fully Covered

DALTON, Mass. — Officials from the Select Board and Planning Board agree that parcel No. 105-16 should be fully mitigated.    For the past eight months, residents have attended numerous meetings in town, urging action to prevent sand from leaving proeprty, owned by Berkshire Concrete, a subsidiary of Petricca Industries.    Berkshire Concrete mitigated part of the parcel by putting down erosion control fabric and hydroseeding.
