 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Celebrate that time Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville took a hike up Monument Mountain in 1850 by walking in their footsteps. Hikers are invited to mark that day exactly 173 years ago on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 9 a.m. with a literary walk to read local poet William Cullen Bryant's "Monument Mountain" with the Berkshire County Historical Society. The guided hike takes approximately 2 1/2 hours and is appropriate for families. BOSTON — The Legislature on Thursday passed a bill that includes $375 million in bond authorizations for transportation needs across the state, including $200 million for the state's Chapter 90 program, which provides municipalities with a reliable funding source for transportation-related improvements, including road and bridge repairs. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) has added a new associate in science degree in Natural & Physical Sciences (NPS), available beginning in the fall 2023 semester. The NPS program was developed as an opportunity to offer students studying the sciences an associate in science degree that included meta-major style pathways in biology, biotechnology, chemistry and physics. Previously, students studying biology and biotechnology earned an associate in arts degree in the liberal arts program. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On July 28, 2023 at approximately 10:35 pm, the Pittsfield Police Dept., Pittsfield Fire Dept. and Action Ambulance responded to the area of 1292 North St for a head-on motor vehicle crash with injuries. A 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck was traveling south bound on North Street in the 1200 block when it collided with a 2019 Nissan Rogue which had been traveling north bound, also in the 1200 block. The driver of the Chevrolet Pick Up Truck was transported to Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) with non-life threatening injuries. DALTON, Mass. — A parent and community leader called out the Central Berkshire Regional School District for how it handles the safety and wellness of students. Joseph Diver, chair of the Select Board, said he was speaking as a resident at Thursday's School Committee meeting. He expressed his disappointment on how bullying incidents are reported and how the district handled recent anti-Semitic harassment that led to a teacher's resignation.  LEE, Mass. -- Lee's Maguire Roosa and Glendale's Morgan Windram-Geddes were the top finishers Sunday at the High Lawn Farm Keep Moo’ving 5K. The event was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the family-owned dairy farm and as a benefit for Berkshire Bounty, a food rescue organization that serves emergency food distribution programs county-wide. Roosa hit the finish line in 19 minutes, 30.45 seconds, a 6:16 mile pace, to edge runner-up Pat McNaughton (19:31.87) by just more than a second.  DALTON, Mass. — The Community Recreation Association is kicking off its countdown to its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 5, with a birthday party on the lawn. The organization has been an integral part of the community since 1916 but its first brick and mortar building was constructed in 1922 with funds willed by W. Murray Crane. The association opened where it stands today, 400 Main St., on Nov. 9, 1923. CRA officials wanted to celebrate the centennial outdoors on the memorial lawn so did not want to wait until November for a ceremony. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter has announced its closing after housing the community’s stray animals for many years.
On Saturday, the no-kill shelter’s board members announced the news on social media. They are looking at Aug. 31 as an official closing date.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors of the Friends of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter is announcing that we have made the decision to close the facility,” the post read.

DALTON, Mass. — The delivery of the Fire District's new ladder truck has been delayed again and is now expected to be delivered by August. While being refurbished at Northern Fire Equipment, it was determined that the truck's Detroit Diesel ECM, which controls the fuel injection, is "shot," interim Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski said. The replacement part costs $2,700, but will be covered by Northern Fire Equipment. Northern Fire Equipment Vice President Michael Burke has also agreed to add a USB-A/USB-C outlet to the dashboard at no charge, Czerwinski said. BOSTON – Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Rebecca Tepper declared drought conditions return to normal following above-normal rainfall for the month of June. All seven regions are at a Level 0-Normal Conditions, including the Western and Cape Cod Regions, which were previously declared at a Level-1 Mild Drought.
